What is gap

Hi, Mike pertaining to engine spark plugs, "GAP" is the distance between the positive and negative electrodes at the base of the plug and is measured in thousands of an inch or mm by using a round pin gap gauge or flat blade feeler gauge. Every engine manufacturer has a specific design-size-heat range- gapped spark plug. Gaps will vary depending on engine brand. Gap is also referred to in engines using a mechanical "POINTS" ignition system instead of electronic ignition (what is the points gap) for more information about your question and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please visit the websites below. How do I set points and condenser on hyosung Mx 125

Hey Maryna, This is a job for a professional,, the timing is critical so engine damage doesn't happen!!.-- BUT, if you have someone who has the tools.. you can do it yourself.
The points control the time the spark plug fires. The point gap makes sure the spark is generated is sufficient enough to provide the energy to the coil to provide the hot spark to the spark plug.
The timing should be around 1.8 - 2.0 mm BEFORE top dead center..(the piston location). When the piston is at 1.8 - 2.0mm BTDC the points should be just breaking contact.. this is the ACTUAL TIMING setting!! You need a dial indicator with attachments to fit into the spark plug hole AND a meter to tell you when the point first open.. The points gap should be .014".
Some engines use the point gap as a timing if the point gap is right (.014") the timing should be close. The timing has to be very close...too advanced (2.2mm BTDC or more) and you will burn a hole in the piston!!!! IF you set the point gap and the timing is off, you need to replace the points. There should be some timing marks somewhere on the flywheel/engine case. If you need more help,, just reply to this post. Good Luck!!

Spark plug gap for 503 Rotex

Hi Faye,

I found this,

Rotax spark plug advisory for ultralight, experimental lightsport, amateur built aircraft.

Rotax 2 stroke aircraft engine spark plugsThe recommended spark plugs for the Rotax 277, Rotax 377, Rotax 447, Rotax 503, Rotax 532, Rotax 582 are the NGK B8ES series or the NGK BR8ES ( the R in the spark plug denotes it is a resistor plug and should be used in all of the CDI ignition engines.

BUT the Bosch points ignition engines should NOT use both a resistor plug and a resistor spark plug cap - use one or the other.

The least expensive option in the long run is the cap as you purchase it once while the resistor plugs cost more than the standard plug each time you buy them.

Ad Code TwoHere

Use spark plugs that have a SOLID TIP - DO NOT USE spark plugs that have an aluminum screw on tip. They vibrate loose, the tip wears making a loose cap to plug fit, and can lead to the spark plug arcking across from the cap to the plug. Also the screw on style spark plugs are NOT designed for our applications, the gap is generally set up for .030 to .035 thou. The solid tip spark plugs are set up for a gap of .015 to .020 thou.

Spark plug gap

  • Allowable range: 0.4-0.5mm / .015 -.020"

  • Optimal: I usually set them to .015 and let them wear out to .019

  • This also helps getting the engine started in colder conditions

Can,t get voltage to spark plug. Checked condensor and points and they are both ok. How do you check the coil ? I,ve tried with a ohm meter but I,m not sure what I should get as far as readings on the...

Hi Garry,

One of the points should connect to the coil and the other to ground, With the points open and the kill switch for the engine off i.e. open circuit, measure the resistance from ground to the other end of the coil which is connected to the points. If this is infinite, the coil has gone open circuit or is not grounded properly. Normally the resistance should be a couple of ohms falling to near zero as the points close. If the resistance doesn't fall, check the points aren't dirty or corroded. they can be cleaned with fine sandpaper and IPA but dont overdo it as the points are given a coating to resist arcing and this can be worn away if you rub too hard.
Try a new spark in case this is the problem.
Possibly the spark lead isn't making contact with the end of the plug in the spark plug booth.
Check the kill switch for the engine isn't shorting out the coil, it should be open circuit when the engine is running.

How to set points

Remove spark plugs to make engine easier to turn over.
Rotate engine until etched line on points cam lines up with the rubbing block on one of the points.
Set gap to .015"
Rotate engine 180 degrees and repeat.
Reinstall spark plugs.
Hook up timing light to left hand spark plug (cylinder #1)
Start bike and hold throttle about 2500 RPMs.
Shift point breaker plate left/right until timing marks align.
Hook timing light to #2 cylinder.
Run @ 2500 RPM.
Adjust remaining point sub-plate (on main point plate) until sceond timing mark aligns by timing light.

Replaced coil, spark plugs, plug wires, rotor and rotor cap, and the part under the rotor (forget the name) car has a miss when idleing and when getting on it, NAPA said the spark plug gap should be .035,...

if this is a four cylinder engine, the plug gap is what NAPA told you, verify you have the right plugs and gap, next remove the cap again and verify the plug wires are pulled into cap where they will lock in.

How do I set the distributor on a 2000 gmc jimmy? Just changed the intake gaskets, but forgot to mark the position of the rotor.

Get the number one piston up, Take the spark plug out the first one on the drivers side.Rotate the engine until the piston reaches TDC before it starts to decend back. U can use a screw driver to put in the spark plug hole. The rotor must point towards the number one spark plug. your local library will have this infor or autozone

1988 toyota camery firering order i need the diagram of the engine and how the spark plugs go on the engine

THE spark plugs are 4 and the firing order is from the front (thats were the fanbelts are )and they are 1342
so the distributor the timing mark on the bottom pully and the rotor button point to the No1 plug lead and points just about to open, and the next lead will point to No3 lead ,and if so then you have the correct timing,,but the points set at 0.012" and the plugs to 0.025" ..And when engine idleing adjust timing on the distributor to advance (thats the oppersite to the way it fires and do it with the vacuum pipe off ,,then when engine runs good ,then tighten calmp and refit the vac pipe and test run.

Still no fire , toro 8/32 briggs stratton engine snowblower

Repair Manual (Antique) - CE8069 for engines built prior to 1981

Point setting should be .020" after they are full open. I am nut sure that TDC will give full open.

Armature/coil air gap should be 'the thickness of the cardboard' of the box it came in.
*note: the coating on the wire from the coil to the points should be sanded off where they connect to the points.

The voltage coming from the coil is DC and may be as much as 8,000 to 15,000 volts. You WILL know it when it has spark, as in, you may have to change your underwear if it sparks and you are touching the end of the wire.

The 'afterthought' is that an electronic coil could have been mounted to eliminate the points to aid in a sharper spark and easier starting.

Final note: make sure all snwoblower frame wiring and switches are working correctly, as this can 'kill' the spark.

Spark plug not sparking

The points are set at 20 thousands. If you installednew ones you may have to use a fine point file to clean them a little sometimes they put a coating on them to keep them in storage ,the armature has a gap of 10 thousands you can use an index card to set these.
