Question about Sony Grand WEGA KF50WE610 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

I have a sony KF-50we610. I am trying to do a LED replacment as a hobby project and I was wondering if anyone could help me disable the bulb missing protection. I know the Bulb PS uses some sort of databus to send a Diag code to the mainboard.

Absoulty, The Tv is on an insulated surface, the PSU is mounted on a blank PCB (so I can keep it at a more accesable location while testing) I have 12 gauge ground wire and a "compacitor discharge wand" (its a piece of metal with an insulated handle) and a wrist grounding strap. The PSU is only handled with one hand unless I can confirm its discharged. (cant with the flyback) ummm what else... all tools are insulated TV is plugged into a directly grounded outlet that is also switched with a keyswitch. (I build tesla coils, jacobs ladders, plasma speakers, rebuild computer PSU's, LCD's.) Most of what I use is overkill for this project but I have it for the tesla coils which could easily kill.

I want to point out that I would prefer a method that would allow me to get rid of the PSU compleatly. That way I could use the 110 and space to mount the LED PSU. but any method would be fine.

Unfourtanatly no, The Tv sends a signal to the PSU to turn on. then the PSU attempts to start the bulb. but the TV wont turn on untill the bulb lights. If I isolate any of the wires from the PSU the TV wont even try to start. Just blinks 5 times.

  • Joe Payton Apr 03, 2011

The problem is the get a signal to start from the PSU when the bulb starts. If it dosent get that pules then it wont turn on. I have tried testing the voltage from the 5 wires and non of them show steady voltage. the flutter like there is a data connection.

They arent labled. What I have found by looking at it is there are 3 communication channels. (optoicolators.) 2in and 1out. I think it is I2C. which means I need to copy and mimic them.

  • Joe Payton Apr 03, 2011

I got a service manual and the pins are,
    1 lamp-prt
    2 gnd
    3 lamp-cnt
    4 gnd
    5 100/120w

  • Joe Payton Apr 03, 2011

pin 1 and 2 are the ones connected to the optoisolator that is going out.

  • Joe Payton Apr 03, 2011

Should I just bridge those connectors?

  • Joe Payton Apr 03, 2011

ok, there is a problem though. When I tuen the tv on the power light blinks green untill the light starts. So I will have to run a test tomorrow.

Alast! It worked, Thank you very much.

He was quick and correct. I was doubtfull but it worked. 0ohm resistor between 2 pins and it was totally bypassed.

Hi,
Can I have info about safety of hobby project?
Because bulb PSU area has hazardous volts so I should know safety measure of that hobby project before providing you info about fooling bulb PSU signals.
Hope I conveyed my point.
Thanks.

Thank you very much for info, since you already working with Tesla coils, fly-backs so I'm satisfied that I'm talking to an electronics experienced person, nice to meet you !
There are two micro safety switches in KF-50WE610 lamp area, one got pushed by lamp body in lamp box of tv and other gets engage by lamp cover (plastic cover), both switch should be pressed to send signal to system control chip that lamp is inside and secure.
On lamp PSU, there is protection signal that can shut off tv, this protection triggers with spark gap pulse if lamp is missing/ broken so isolate that pin/ signal to avoid tv shut down.
    Hope this will help.
    Thanks.

I gave you info how it works, hope you will find your way about PSU now.
    Thanks.

There is one error output from PSU to system control chip that sends error signal, tv shuts off and start blinking 5 times, just disconnect that one pin from PSU so system control wont get signal. This is not continues communications between chips (i2c) that utilized serial clock and serial data signals.

Can you post pin names here if these are written on 5 pin jack of PSU board?

    Shahid Electronics Apr 03, 2011

To my understanding, PSU control jack would have following 5 pins..

    1- 5V supply
    2- GND
    3- Lamp control/ On
4- HV error (triggers by spark gap located at output of HV)
5- +B error (No +B supply to PSU)

I'm not sure about pin order (number could be different) but PSU control jack would consist of above said commands. I do not think of I2C communication in PSU.

Now its confirmed that PSU does not have I2C communication, it has 2 kind of protections, one control signal and 2 points for supply volts.
Hope it will be easy to disable protection commands.

OK, pin 1 and 2 send opto-coupler output to protection circuit, it would maintain a certain voltage level for *no error* and any change will trigger protection circuit.

Correct, you have all info about lamp PSU and can amend it as per your requirement.
    Thanks.

3 times standby red light blinking shows that lamp cover has not been placed back properly after lamp replacement.
Make sure lamp cover, (the first thing that you removed to replace lamp in tv) is fixed securely then turn tv On.
