Thermostat lights up but will not turn on heat, just clicks

The T-stat is only a switch, not a heating unit. A car ignition switch only starts and stops an engine, but the engine does the work. The T-stat is unlikely the cause of the problem. Provide more information like the kind of heat (gas, oil, heat pump)and what the unit is or isn't doing.

Kenmore 100.85081400 no heat

check the thermal fuse on the blower housing if its open some units wont heat, also check the heating element if heated electrically,or the ignitor on gas fired units,by the number you provided i believe you meant its a 110.85081400 instead of the 100.85081400 (and is electrically heated) you provided which is produced by whirlpool for sears (kenmore) also there is a control board located inside behind the control panel that may be a culprit, but check the first two things i suggested at the top

My heat pump has a problem heating when it is very cold. should i cut the emerg. heat on?

The emergency heat setting on the heat pump thermostat is manually selected by the equipment owner. This is usually in response to a malfunction in the outdoor unit. Doing so locks out the outdoor unit. The indoor auxiliary heating system must provide the heat required. Setting the thermostat to the heat position allows the outdoor unit to operate. Due to the expense of electric resistance heating compared to the efficiency of the heat pump, repairs should be made as soon as possible.

When the unit is switch to heat, the unit is not blowing out hot air. I put the unit on 85 and still cold air only. What should I do?

Is this a "heat pump" or is this a "air conditioner with a heat strip"?

A heat strip in an air conditioner will not be noticable hot but will eventually provide some warmth for a small space.

Generally, A heat pump is much better at providing heat than a 'heat strip' BUT is not as quick as OIL or GAS or ELECTRIC heat source (furnace).

What ever kind of device you have, turning up the temp will NOT make it work faster! Generally speaking, When you are calling for heat, the heat device turns on FULL, and stays on at that rate until the heat (or cool if you are cooling) requirement has been met. In other words, it is either ON or OFF. Increasing the demand will not make it work faster, contrary to common belief.

Till what outside temp is the 8Kw heating output

Are you referring a to an electric furnace providing the heat, the heat pump providing the heat, a heat pump providing heat usually with an auxillary/emergency electric heating unit, or an air conditioner with an electric furnace attached? If your system normally uses a heat pump for the heat normally, there is an eletric auxilliary heater. You'll probably need to turn it on at the thermostat manually when the outside temp gets below 40 degrees. If you have it nice system, it might do it automatically. If you're referring to the electric heater being rated 8 kw, it'll run using 8kw when you turn it on. It doesn't have the ability to change what heat rating it is. If you're refurring to the heat pump system being rated 8kw, you're probably mistaken. A heat pump might possibly consume 8kw to run the system but that can't be a measure of the system's capacity. Heat pump measurement units are rated in tons, but the system will always run at the same ton capacity whenever it's on, provided it doesn't need any maintenance. Some commercial air conditioning and heating systems have to ability to modify their power output based on the outside temperature, but I doubt you're dealing with that kind of thing.

I'm trying to figure out if our Weather King system has a heat pump... how do I tell?

Your indoor furnace is weather king? If you have a a/c unit outside, it could be a heat pump, but you have to provide the model number on it.. If you do have a unit outside, when you call for heat does the outdoor unit kick on?

Blows cool air

This is normal. To maximize the units efficiency the fan continues to run until all the heat from the coil is pasted to the circulating air.
