My Acer Aspire X3400 desktop did not come with wifi installed. Will a usb wireless adapter work or do I have to use pci, pcie? Also do drivers usually come with these adapters or do they have to be downloaded?

Hi,
You can use either of the usb wifi adapter or the pci. It comes with an installation cd.
You can use usb coz' its easier to install.

My suggestion would be a mini-pcie laptop card, N300 or higher (you can buy them on Amazon and Ebay for around 25 dollars, Azureware or Intel are usually good) and a low-profile mini-pcie to pcie adapter which comes with antenna. Making acer aspire m3400 go wireless

You need to add a pci wireless card to the inside of the pc if you have a spare pci slot inside, or you can now get a usb wireless dongle/adapter.
Have a look on EBay, they have loads of both and really cheap.

Can i take the wifi from my dell optiplex 160l and put it in my acer computer?

The answer to your question will depend on what expansion slots your new Acer desktop computer has and whether one of these will match the specific 'half mini PCI-e' card which is used in the Dell Optiplex 160L per http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/optiplex-160/pd which states it is an Optional Dell Wireless 1397 802.11BG Half Mini-PCIe card.
You will also need to obtain the device drivers for this wireless card in order to use it in the Acer.
Given that the Dell wireless card is only an 11/54MB standard card (802.11BG) I would recommend buying a newer 802.11N wireless card which will be sold with the necessary device driver and software applications needed, will give higher speed connectivity access and be much simpler to install and manage.

Can I install wifi card on M5641?

According to the Acer Support web site for your desktop computer you should have one or two free PCI slots that could be used if you decide to add a wireless lan card.

The alternative would be get a USB wireless adapter that wouldn't need you to open the computer case and have the advantage that you could plug the adapter in to a USB extension cable and position the wireless adapter to maximise the wireless signal.

What do I need to activate wireless on insignia D400a through broadband?

To use Wifi on a D400 series PC, you would need to purchase a wifi PCI card (Do not get any PCIe or PCI2 or newer card specs) or wifi USB adapter.

Since standard PCI is consider mostly obsolete, they can be found fairly cheak, usually under $10 usd on places like Amazon.

Acer

Hi

I'm not sure, please open the computer case and see if there is a free pci slot.

Note that opening the computer might void warranty.

Also, you would do fine with a USB Wifi adapter. cost around the same if not cheaper.

Thanks and good luck,
let me know if you need anything else.

Wireless network setup

Hi,

Based on your post, you currently have a working Netgear WiFi Card installed in your laptop. What you want to do is remove it from the laptop and install the said card to your desktop.

For your desktop to be able to accept the NetGear WFi card which is a PCMCIA Cardbus device, you need to install either:
1. a USB Adapter for PCMCIA as shown here; or
2. a CardBus/PCMCIA to PCI Adapter Card available here.

Either one will work. Of course you need to install the necessary drivers for the NetGear MA701NA in your desktop which is available from the CD installer that came with the NetGear or online here.

Considering the cost of the USB adapter or the PCMCIA to PCI card, you may want consider buying a PCI WiFi card or USB WiFi dongle.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
