Question about Sony STR-DB790 Receiver

Open Question

Hi, I am also having a problem with my Sony STR - DB790 amplifier. All my surround sound speakers work fine, but my subwoofer output is not. I have confirmed the SW amp is OK by using another audio source, and also did a factory reset on the amp and re programmed the settings. The speakers were set up using the simple method. Appreciate any help.

SOURCE: Hi, having a problem with

RCA cable. It's called RCA when carrying Line Level audio; Coaxial when carrying digital data.

Does the sub work when you run speaker setup? It's in the manual.

How can i connect my laptop to a db790 amplifier?

All you need is a 3.5mm Stereo Mini jack to two RCA jacks. Connect this to the line or speaker out of the laptop into anything but the phono input on your sony. The phono input will be over driven and sound bad and possibly damage something in the system. Try using any other unused device input on the receiver.

I have set up a BOSE Accustimass System with my STR de485 receiver. How do I adjust the treble/bass?

hi,
if u are using bose speaker system then remember one thing. go to speaker setup and select all the speakers as large not small. then only u will get a good tone. bose speakers will handle the output power of ur amplifier.
u can only adjust the bass and treble of ur frond Channel speakers. for that
select multi channel surround sound and the increase and decrease the bass and treble
ok

Hi Kevin, This may not be a solution but you`ve most likely burnt out the amplifiers, I have the same model and its just burnt out the amplifiers for the second time. I was`nt cranking the volume and it was running my Bose AM 5`s which are very good speakers. Its expensive to repair and not many tech heads will take on anything "Sony". If you do have any luck fixing it please get in touch. *n.crookgto@bigpond.com* Regards, Neil.

I want to run an additional amplifier from my 5.1 surround system amp speaker output to drive large dj speakers. The dj speakers need 175 rms and my 5.1 only has 100 rms per channel. Can I just wire from...

Speaker output from the amplifier is a higher voltage than a preout. The speaker level signal has to be reduced to a line level signal in order to connect to another amplifier. I used a car stereo "speaker to line level adapter" and then connected a second amp to run my front channel speakers. Works just fine.

Sony-DG820 Subwoofer

The powered subwoofer should be connected to the black subwoofer output near the bottom of the receiver in just about the center. A subwoofer uses line level signals and has its own amplifier, Good chance that you wiped out a channel. Put the wiring back the way it was, and IF the channel was not directly connected to the speaker terminals, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE it will still work.
Chances are slim...

Subwoofer Connection: Speaker wire to Mono RCA

The easiest solution to use your subwoofer is to buy an amp for it. Any old stereo receiver from a garage sale will probably do just fine.
  1. Connect the mono RCA subwoofer output from your Sony with a 1xRCA-to-2xRCA splitter to both the left and right input of the cheap reciever's tape or aux input
  2. connect both speaker outputs of the cheap reciever to the speaker input on your subwoofer. make sure both black (-) outputs on the reciever connect to the black input on the sub, and the red outputs (+) on the reciever are both connected to the red input on the subwoofer.
  3. make sure the cheap receiver's volume is all the way down. turn your Sony up to about the loudest you'll listen to it. turn up the subwoofer amp until it's loud enough to sound good.
  4. leave the subwoofer amp alone, the Sony volume will all you ever need to touch from now on.

You can even now turn off your subwoofer / adjust the volume easily now!
