thank you for suggesting ExpertGPS map software at $74.95.

I have not tried it but the description indicates it will enable me to draw new foot trails on a topo map.

    Thanks

How to Make Topographic Maps

Topographic maps are specifically purposed for elevation of the land area, as well as outlining geographic locations, such as mountains. Topographic maps are used by architects, geographic profressionals, and by outdoor recreations, primarily hikers.

Instructions

Determine the location you want to map, and gather maps of that location from local libraries or Internet resources, such as the link in the Resources section. From the maps you have aqcuired, record elevation levels, compass, scale, and any landmarks.

Establish a scale, which will represent the distance. For example, one inch represents one mile. Draw the scale on a corner of the map.

Create a compass direction, the four arrows that designate North, East, South, and West, from which you will establish how the map will face. The compass is typically located on the corner of the poster.

Draw the general shape of the location you are mapping, starting with the lowest elevation first. Label that line with whatever elevation it may be.

Start drawing elevation lines based on an established increment; for example, draw a line for every 50 feet of elevation.

Create symbols for significant landmarks, such as a triangle shape to symbolize a mountain peak.

Write the location of the map at the top of the poster.

Using as many maps available to create the topographic map will give more accurate detail, such as elevation levels, specific landmarks, etc.

Where do i go to down load update for my gps 295. garmin said thay dont support this unit. thanks joe

Joe,

The Garmin "GPSMap 295" is at, as far as Garmin is concerned anyway, "end of life". This means Garmin will no longer support, repair, etc. this product. C'est la vie.

Garmin's older product lines lack the hardware to decompress the new "NT" (New Technology) maps that Navtek (the map company) is producing now. The NT maps are compressed so that they would fit on smaller capacity memory cards. By doing this, the maps required Garmin to include hardware (special designed circuitry) that could quickly decompress these maps "on the fly" for display. The much of Garmin's older GPSMap & StreetPilot lines predate this hardware requirement.

Our "still-functioning" GPSMap & StreetPilot GPSr will still pinpoint our location on the Earth as always - but lack the latest & greatest maps. You should review the maps that your GPSr can use and choose the one you prefer. I switched mine to display topographical maps. These show many of the road names like the City Navigator maps do, but lack important things like the POIs and routing. If you can do without them, this could be good enough. If you can't, you'll need to decide on whether the last non-NT map version is sufficient or purchase a new GPS that can accept the maps you want to put into it.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Garmin 76S handheld; power shuts off with a black vertical line on the screen.

When I have seen this problem in the past it generally means it is time for a new unit or a repair. It is a hardware issue that a user can not fix. For your local repair depot please contact Garmin @ 1-800-800-1020

Using dnr garmin or map source how do I transfer from excel

I've just had to do this. Somewhat annoying and I'm sure there must be a quicker way. Let me know if you find one.

Firstly you need ArcGIS or something that can create .shp files. Load the Excel file into this. In Arc you need to right click the table and display the x y data (just to make sure it's all okay). Then save as a layer. Then export as an .shp file.

You can the open the.shp in DNRGarmin and upload to your GPS..,
How to Transfer Maps to GPSmap 60csx

You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.

I have a garmin oregon 400t and I cant see the elevation lines, or topographical lines

You may be in an area where there is not enough topography for the topo lines to show up. Pan tothe Smokey Mountains and see if they show up.

Have problems with the loading of the map XPC415S. Australia East coast. Will this map work with this unit?

Any bluechart that has been preloaded on an SD card should work. Did you purchase your chip with the data preloaded or did you download it yourself? If you downloaded it yourself, try erasing the sd card, format it, then insert the blank card in the 420 and power it up. This somehow preps the chip for the data download. Then download the bluechart onto the chip and try again. There is some ambiguous wording in the download screen that makes it look like some kind of error, try the download anyway and most of the time it will work. After the download is complete it should list the bluechart software version on the screen along with some other software info. If the operating system software is not v2.5 or higher, you may need to download a software update first.
