Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a acer aspire 7735z - which installed Linux ubuntu 10.4 - an upgrade popped up when I was connected to the Internet - so I clicked ok. The upgrade was in process - it said 40-50 mins. So I left it. When I came back the computer was shut down. I tried starting the computer - the blue power light comes on - u can hear the fan spinning then it turns off. HELP!!! What can I do to get the computer running?

Thanks for your assistance. I'm actually embarrassed - your answer helped me narrow down my problem. My power source for the laptop was not plugged into the wall. O well. Thanks again. I'm gonna re-install Linux but 10.10 I picked up yesterday. Also virtual box 4.0. Have a great day....

Welcome to Fixya

First of all, doing a software upgrade has nothing to do why the computer screen is not giving you a display. Try to use an external monitor if your laptop has a vga port just to check if you have display using external monitor. You may try to drain the electrostatic charge of the mainboard which sometimes causes this issue. Please click here on how to do it.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you for using Fixya!

My Acer Inspire one Has Linux Lite installed how do I Install Ubuntu from a USB key. I am a total Newbie to Linux

This will not be very easy if you are new to Linux. However, I will provide the instructions for preparing the live USB. I assume you are working on your Aspire with Linux Lite installed.
The same instructions apply for Windows, though will you need UNebootin for Windows. I advise you to carry out the task from a windows PC, as it will be much easier from there.

You will need:

A USB flash drive with 1GB space.

A high speed broad band connection.

Ubuntu live CD ISO file. Download it from here.

UNebootin. Download from here. (Download the version for Linux).

Note: If you already have the Ubuntu Live CD then it will save you the download. Make an ISO image of the CD and put it on the desktop.

Now you have to follow this procedure:

Run the UNebootin.

Connect your USB flash drive to your laptop. Take into account the drive letter.

UNebootin has a self explanatiory GUI. You have the choice to download the ISO from this program or to point to the ISO image you downloaded previously.

Choose your USB drive letter from the drop-down list within UNebootin.

Now it will copy the files to the flash drive.

Next you have to set the BIOS to boot from USB drives.

Insert the newly created flash drive in the port and boot from it. The Ubuntu installation should start.

Linux installation is just like that for Windows.

You may have a conflict with the hardware. I have had installations fail because of this. You may want to use the Ubuntu live CD to boot into Ubuntu. If this works out for you, you should be able to install.

If you cannot boot into Ubuntu using the live CD, try booting into the CD using some special boot prompts. See this How To:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html

I find nolapic noapci noapic did the trick for me on my HP.

Networking with windows

Hello there.

Nice to see more people using Linux and Ubuntu. For information on how to share your Ubuntu folder to linux, over file sharing click here

You basically only need to right click the folder you want to share, in Ubuntu, then enable sharing and when prompted to install services, tick the box called 'Install Windows network support'

Hope this helps.

ps: if you haven't seen the Ubuntu community documentation, click here

Unable to install linux

The Acer Aspire 4710 uses a SATA hard drive. Unfortunately Redhat Linux 9.0 does not have SATA support (uses the 2.4 kernel). You will have to upgrade to something recent like Fedore Core 7 or Ubuntu 7.10. Hope this helps.
