Question about KitchenAid Refrigerators

1 Answer

My KitchenAid model # KTRS20K refrigerator is freezing everything in the refrigerator. Do you know what the problem could be? I have cleaned the coils...unplugged and defrosted for 24 hours, adjusted controls...etc...and it is still freezing things. This refrigerator was in our house when we moved in...so I am not sure how old it is. Is it worth repairing or not?

I am not familiar with this refrigerator, but what you describe can happen if the refrigerator uses a motorized damper to control the refrigerator temp by varying amount of air from the freezer that circulates in the refrigerator compartment. If the damper door is stuck in the open position or broken, the refrigerator temp will not be controlled and freezing can occur in the refrigerator compartment.

The center pillar between the freezer and refrig is hot to the touch

That's entirely normal and nothing to worry about. It is a design feature that stops the door freezing shut. Check the condenser is clean and everything else is normal.

That does not sound like a defrost timer problem. Sounds like a condenser or evaporator fan is beginning to fail. They don't always stop when they fail. Many will slow down and stop while you are not looking causing the refrigerator to stop cooling for a while. Let me know if you have any questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

Your water hose that connects to the back of the freezer may be loose. Move the fridge out away and in the back make sure it is tightend.

Let me know if it helped :)

Kitchenaid refrigerator w/bottom freezer french doors

please check the air flow to the refrigerator side. it could be a stuck damper motor or damper thermostat. if the fan inside the freezer is running, you should be able to feel cold air coming out off the vents in the refrigerator side. you might have to press the button light switch on the panels to run the fan.
