Question about Electrical Supplies

I have just bought a light switch that has 3 connection points but i have 4 wires 2red and 2 black whichever way i wire it up the fuse blows how should i wire it to stop the fuse blowing.

    What or how many lights are you trying to switch and what does the switch look like? Logic says that the two red wires should go together to the center connector on the switch and the two black ones should go together on one of the other connectors?

What does the switch control?
Does more than 1 switch control same thing?
What type of device was there before? Switch? What color screws are on old switch?
What color screws are on new switch?

With information above, we can test the wires and determine which wire connects to which color screw.

I have a box that has four 110(black, white and copper) wires coming in. (1) is power, (2) is light (3) is outlet & (4) is light across the room. I need power to (2), (3) & (4) but need a switch to (2)...


Firstly (1) will be Black=hot, White=neutral and Copper=Ground. Don't work on these wires with them live.
All copper wires will be connected together and if possible, the metal box earth lug.
You will need a SPST or SPDT switch (image of SPDT switch is shown below) to mount in your junction box. If your switch has a ground lug, you need to also connect the copper wire there.
(1) Black will connect to Switch Common, (3) Black and (4) Black. Note: all can connect to the Switch Common connection as the switch will generally allow 3 wires to be connected per terminal; one push terminal and two screw pressed terminals.
(1) White will be connected to (2) White, (3) White and (4) White. For this connection, you can use a twist cap of the correct size to parallel these neutral wires.
(2) Black will connect to other free connection on the switch. There may be two free connections, so the one you use will basically determine which direction the switch will be on/off.
Once connected and checked, you can power up. If correctly wired, you should now have switched power to (2) and continuous power to (3) and (4).

How to wire Lumax Intensifier 3 without cigar plug


It looks fairly straightforward.
Red and Black go to the Positive and negative, (It's best to have the switch on the negative side).

The Lights themselves look like they come in two groups, the Left and Right, controlled by the Orange and Blue wires respectively. Both can be added together to the Red connection if a switch will be used to turn them on and off (Using the negative side), otherwise, another switch is necessary or the one you have must be used between the positive connection and/or positive leads to controll this positive signal input.

The yellow, (and white if included) are not necessary.
The Green one just brightens the lights, (like the brake light over the flashers, is brighter).

Notes:
- LED lights only work when hooked up with the positive and negative in the correct order. A LED (Light Emmitting Diode) will not light up if hooked up backwards.

- Generally, the positive and negative (red and black) will be connected to the power source all the time, and the signal wires, Blue and Orange will be intermittently hooked up to the positive (red), to switch on the lights using an internal transistor switch, but the same can be achieved if the positive and the signal wires are attached to the positive together, then either the negative or positive attachement to the cars power is switched using the switch you already have..

-Do not connect the lights in series with the other lights; connect all the positives, (and signal wires) to the positive, and the negative wires to the negative source. The fuses will only handle the system they were designed for.

You have 3 cables entering the box.
Each cable has black and white and ground wire.
You have a single pole switch.
The switch has 2 brass-colored screws and 1 green-colored screw.

1) One thing is certain: all the ground wires connect together and then connect to green screw on switch.

2) After that, we are guessing without more information.

3) What does the switch control?

4) If the switch controls a hallway light, and there is another switch for the same light: then you have wrong switch. You need 3-way switch. Buy 3-way switch and re-post question at fixya.

5) If switch controls a bath fan-light combo, repost question at fixya.

6) If the switch controls a regular light, and no other switch is involved: then the following information might work. Or you need to do testing and re-post another question at fixya.

-White wires probably connect together and are covered with a wire nut.

-Then two black wires connect to one brass screw and 1 black wire connects to other brass screw.

-But which black wire?

-Only one of the black wires has power from circuit breaker. That is hot wire.
-Hot wire connects to 1st brass screw on switch. Either screw.

-And then connect one of the other black wires to 2nd brass screw. Turn on power and see if light turns on.
-Try other black wire same way.
-The black wire(s) that turn on lights on should be left connected to 2nd brass screw.
-If one black wire did not turn on lights, then that wire probably connects to 1st brass screw along with hot wire.

The Casablanca 88U33M Scandia Ceiling Fan only has three wires, a black, a white, and a green wire (ground). How do you wire the fan and light on seperate switches?


If you want to control both the light and the fan using 3-ways, then just wire 2 sets of the 3-way circuits. For this you need two sets of 3-wire between the switches, and one 3-wire cable from the switch location to the fan/light box.

At box #1 (a 2 gang box), you will run a power cable (marked cable #1) into it. From there you run 2 sets of 3-wire cables (identified as cable #2 & cable #3) to the other switch location, which will also be a 2-gang box (box #2).

Also from box #1, you will run a 3-wire cable (cable #4) to the fan/light box (box #3).

Hook up is as follows:

Box #3: connect black of cable #4 to black (fan), connect red of cable #4 to blue (light), connect white of cable #4 to white (fan/light), and connect the bare to the green.

Box #2: Connect white of cable #2 to identified terminal on 1st 3-way switch (#3). Connect red & black of cable #2 to the remaining screws of 3-way switch #3. Next connect white of cable #3 to identified terminal of 2nd 3-way switch (#4), and connect black and red to remaining screws. Tie all grounds together and terminate to both switches.

At box #1, connect black from cable #1 to whites in cables #2 & #3, using a wirenut. Connect white in cable #1 to white in cable #4. Connect black and red in cable #2 to 3rd 3-way switch (#1) and connect black and red in cable #3 to 4th 3-way switch (#2). Connect black in cable #4 to identified terminal of 3-way switch #1, and connect red in cable #4 to identified terminal on 3-way switch #2. Tie all grounds together and to the switches

Cannot get the decora 4 way light switch to work - 2 of the 3 switches work but cannot get the 3rd to work. Replacing regular toggle switches which all worked but wiring different for decora switches.


Decora 3-way and 4-way switches do not wire differently than toggle-type switches.
Instructions below are tedious but will accurately guide you to solution.

Let's break down the problem starting with 3-ways.

1) Start with 3-way switches:
Old 3-way switch has 2 brass screws and 1 dark screw
New decora has same color screws.
Wire that went to dark screw on old device must attach to dark screw on decora device.
Other two wires can attach to either brass screw.
Wires that attach to brass screws are travelers ... these wires travel to the 4-way switch.
So there are 2 traveler wires at each 3-way switch.

2) Let's test if 3-way switches are wired correctly by taking 4-way switch out of equation.
We will resolve problem with 4-way switch after 3-ways are correct.

There are 4 wires at the 4-way switch.
These are the 2 traveler wires that arrive from each 3-way switch.

At the 4-way switch, 2 wires arrive in one cable, and 2 wires arrive from another cable.
To say it differently, there are 2 wires from cable1 and 2 wires from cable2.
Connect 1 wire from cable1 to 1 wire from cable2 with a wire nut
Now connect the 2nd wire from cable1 to 2nd wire from cable2 with another wire nut.
So now the traveler wires are connected, and the 4 way switch is out of equation.
Turn on power, and click 3-way switches to see if both switches turn lights on-off in all positions.

Do your 3-way switches work correctly?

3) If 3-ways are not correct, then you have wrong wire connected to dark screw.
First thing to check is if you can identify traveler wire colors by looking at wires at 4-way switch.
Remember, traveler wires at 4-way switch go back to 3-way switch and connect to brass screws on 3-way switch.

4) If you cannot tell traveler wires by looking at 4-way switch, then you can try different combinations until both 3-way switches work.
Or you can test: disconnect wires from one of the 3-way switches. Separate 3 wires for testing. Move other 3-way switch to down position. Turn on power. Test each wire to bare ground wire. Mark wire that lights up. Now move other 3-way to up position. Test each wire to bare ground wire. If same wire lights up each test, then that wire goes to dark screw. If different wire lights up, then mark that wire. The two marked wires are travelers, and they connect to brass screws. Other wire connects to dark screw. Repeat identical test for other 3-way switch.

At this point your 3-way switches will work, if light bubs are not burned out.

5) Last step, the 4 way switch.
Remember from step above, that 2 wires arrive in cable1: These 2 wires connect on one side of 4-way switch. The other 2 wires that arrive in cable2 connect of other side of 4-way switch.

In replacing a broken pull chain (no 3-way power here: simple pull-on/pull-off) on the 3-bulb light fixture of my fan/light combo ceiling appliance, I lost track of how to re-attach the two black wires...


I assume the switch operates the lights only. Besides the ground (green or bare) and the neutrals (4 white wires all connected together), the only wires of interest should be 4 wires (black) from the fixture and the 2 wires on your switch. Of the 4 black wires, one of them is the hot wire and the other 3 connect to the three bulbs. Connect the hot wire to either one of your switch leads and connect the other 3 wires to the other switch lead.
If you don't know which of the 4 black wires is hot you can find it by the process of elimination as follows---- connect any three of the black wires together (then supply power), if nothing lights, then the 4th wire is hot. Otherwise 2 bulbs should light. Remove one wire from this trio. If nothing lights, the wire you just removed is the hot wire. Otherwise, one bulb should light and one of these two remaining wires is the hot wire. Take one of those last two wires and connect it to one of the other bulbs. If it lights, then the wire you just moved is hot. Otherwise the one you left behind is hot. I hope this is helpful. Good luck. Be safe! Al K

Replacing a pull chain 3-way ceiling fan light switch


OK .. the thick black and white are the power for the fan , are there also white wires on the lamp sockets ..??
The thick black wire should connect to the black wire on the switch.
The small black wires connect to the red and blue wire on the switch .. two small black wires each .. that should give you a position for 2 lights , and 4 lights, on the step switch .. but there should be white wires from the lamp sockets connected to the thick white from the fan .

I need to wire a 3 gang switches in a 3 gang box


before u start make sure power is off before working with electrical lines ---start with the 12/2 coming into box black [power] white [ground-neutral] and u will have 3 separate lines for the lights so u will have 4 lines total coming in the box== with the 3 light lines take the white and strip back the plastic and connect [wire nut] all 3 to the 12/2 white line --now take the 12/2 black line and connect it to the first switch gold color screw- bottom screw -now take some wire about 2-3 inch strip both ends and connect from the 12/2 black wire connection on the switch and connect to the gold /bottom of switch 2 than do the same for switch 3 connecting the wire from switch 2 so u will have power feeding all 3 switches-- now connect the black lines for the lights to the other side of each switch and ur done

Need coil wiring diagram


Contact points cover open.

Left side points are for cylinders 1 and 4.
Right side points are for cylinders 2 and 3

Left side points have a White wire coming from it.
Right side points have a Black wire coming from it.

One coil runs two cylinders.

One coil runs cylinders 1 and 4.
One coil runs cylinders 2 and 3.

No matter what style of ignition coil you use, the Black wire will connect to the Points. Whatever other color of wire they use, connects to the ignition switch.

BUT, check the specifications for the coils you're going to install. Connect the Negative side to the points. The Positive side to the ignition switch.

The Orange wire with a White stripe, coming out of the harness of the Suzuki Gs550 is from the ignition switch. It goes to a splice connector, and from there goes to two wires. The wires split off into one wire for each coil.

There is a White wire on the coil, that is used for Cylinders 1 and 4.
There is a Black wire on the coil, that is used for Cylinders 2 and 3.

Trying to hook up a dimmer switch it has a red black yellow and green wire the box has a black white and ground which wires get connected together?


For a single-pole installation:

1. Connect the 2 white wires together (one from the source and the other to/from the light fixture) - 2 wires
2. Connect the black wire from the source to the black wire on the dimmer switch - 2 wires
3. Connect the black wire to/from the light fixture to the red wire on the dimmer switch - 2 wires
4. Connect the ground wires - 3 wires
