I have had this problem for years. The problem was intermittent and would usually go away after a week but return about two months later. Weird. Now it won't go away and I have tried all the steps mentioned here. One question: How do you know the scanner/encoder/white strip is properly aligned vertically? It fits in a little trough but can slide up and down in it. I've tried placing it at the top of the trough, top of the glass centered in the scanning area and bottom of glass. It's not working.

Make sure that the printer is plugged directly into the wall outlet and not into a power strip / surge protector. A change in expected voltage can produce very bizarre behavior. Once plugged into the wall, if you are still experiencing the problem, I suggest an on-line chat with HP. It's free.

Thank you for such well documented steps. I have written them all down (since I can't print them out) and will attempt once I can purchase the proper screw driver. Does anyone know where I can obtain the right screw driver? It looks like a maple leaf, round on the bottom with 4 fingers on the top.

    Jo-AnneP,

You ROCK! Your detailed instructions gave me the confidence to do surgery on my unit. I am NOT a "tech" type person. I bought a T-10 size star bit screw driver A.K.A. "Torx" and was able to get into the unit. I followed each of your steps exactly. My glass was filmy and probably caused a glare when the scanner light was on, prohibiting it from seeing the stop and start marks. I checked the mirrors and lens and all were clean so I did not touch them. During the process the ribbon came out of the touch pad but I figured where it came from and had no problem re inserting it.

The unit works fabulously with no problems. FixYa saved me over $200 today. Thanks for the forums!

Hello Thomas,

I would suggest you go to the following page and look at sillygirls response this worked for me.

Actually Thomas here you go. I would try to clean the glass on top then go through the reset process. If this does not work then take it apart and clean the underside of the glass as well. Then you would need to go through re-set process again.

To fix it you have to clean the glass from the inside and reset the device by pressing the # button along with 6 button, and then plug the power cable in while pressing them.

First of all you should disconnect the printer from all cables.

  • Jo-Anne Aug 08, 2008

Sorry but one more thing the cables. Apparently you press the re-set buttons #6 while plugging the power back into the machine.

  • Jo-Anne Aug 08, 2008

On another note: I have done this and it has worked to stop the knocking. However once in a while it happens again.

Right now, I can print but the machine doesn't find the scanner when I try to scan. Sometimes it will find the scanner, scan the photo then when I press Accept on the HP software I get the message about no connection to scanner or cannot find scanner...

So, the knocking has stopped but now there are other problems... Going back to see if I can find a solution to the scanner thing now.

I have an HP Camera as well and have had nothing but little technical problems like this since the day I bought both products...

    Wish me luck

Here is everything I could find and compiled. I did the res-et etc. and worked to stop knocking. Did not clean mirrors etc. and machine is not finding scanner. So I need to go back in a clean mirrors/lenses and check the black strip.

Got original guts of solution from sillygirl on this page. Added some information provided from FixYaBoy and Sergey C. Thank you to both.

    Disconnect all cables from printer.

I would try to clean the glass on top then go through the reset process (press #6 while plugging the power back into the machine). If this does not work, then think about taking the machine apart to clean inside and underside of glass as well. Then you would need to go through re-set process again.

In another solution it states - you must clean all the mirrors inside the scanner assembly (black box closed with two locks) also the lens and the delicate spaghetti-like lamp. Generally this works... Not everyone has done this part but worth a try when desperate.

{From Sergey C - I also had similar problem with HP OfficeJet 6110 xi. The Scanner Initialization would fail at start up because the electric motor would not stop the test and the rubber belt would make snapping noise. I tried every single solution above and it still did not help. I even opened up the scanning head and cleaned all of the 4 mirrors inside. Still nothing ....and then I noticed that the scanner head would not stop because it did not know when to stop....meaning that it could not find or see the mark that tells it to stop.

    from Sergey C {Then I looked on the inside - underneath the glass where the scanner head was looking for mark and found it in the form of a plastic strip that had black edges and white line on inside. And that is when I noticed that the black paint on the edges was flaking off and leaving uneven edge. I repaired all the white spots on the black edge with black permanent marker and after putting everything back together :) the printer finally started working.}

May need to buy a set of screw drivers for removing the glass. They are different.

    1. Disconnect the printer from all cables.

    2. Remove all the screws that hold the glass panel (you do not need to remove the one screw that's on the left hand side, in the middle).

    3. Remove the plastic panel that's over the buttons just by popping it up using a knife or something similar.

    4. Extract the keyboard from the inside by unhooking the lock that's on the bottom right of the keyboard (close to the center)and slide the whole board to the left.

    5. Then lift the upper unit with the glass panel and place it in the back standing up.

    6. You can now reach the inside of the glass and clean it with a window cleaner using a dry clean cloth.

    7. While you're at it, push that slider unit to the left and lift it out; the left side of the metal rod is not screwed in.

    8. Remove the black slider unit by unhooking the belt from the slider unit and gently pull out the electrical harnest cable (you might want to mark one side with a permanent marker to remember which side when you re-attached the cable).

    9. Gently and carefully pop open the cap on the bottom side.

    10. Once it's opened, you'll see about 4 mirrors inside and a camera lens. Dip a couple of swabs in windex and GENTLY clean and dry all mirrors and camera lens.

    11. Carefully re-install everything by retracing your steps.

    12. Reset unit by pressing the # and the 6 keys together while plugging in the power.

I went back and finished cleaning scanner mirrors, glass, lens, checked black strip but it was OK.

Have not tried the Fax yet however everything seems to be working now. I have been having major issues with the scanner itself not working or the knocking.

    IT'S WORKING!!!

Do you get normal power after restart? If so, ECU is limiting power as it has detected a problem. Need scanner to determin what code/s has been set in ECU.

Hp M525mfp error 49.38.07

the scanner assy is clearly being blocked by something in its feed path, there is a scanner lock lever under the lft side of the scanner - which may still be partially locked and not fully opened, otherwise the error is with the drive mech for the scanner assy, removing the copy glass and gently moving the scanner assembly to the right with the power fully disconnected; looking carefully for cause of the blockage as the assembly moves. the code relates to the scanner assy not reaching the target distance from the home position before timing out.

Blue lines on the right and left sides of the scanned items

Usually this is cuased by something stuck on the scanner. if you have a small peice of dust stuck on it as the paper goes through the scan it thinks that it is all the way down the paper because it seen it all the way through the scan. Clean the scanning surface with a correct cleaner and it should go away and scan normally.

Have you been using ink cartridges other than store bought? Reason I'm asking is that i used a refill kit, and tried those half price refill places, only to find ink was leaking out when not in use & clogged up the ends where the cartridge moves across. take a flashlight & look at the ends of the track that the cartridges slide across on, you may see a build up of ink, that won't allow the cartridge to travel as far as it needs to go to run properly.

Get and "L' message on the readout - it does not move when you turn it on

most likely the sensor that reads the scanner is at home position, is out of place.
It is probably hitting or rattling against the right side.
remove glass, (W/POWER OFF), move scanner away, and look on the sides of the machine there should be a U shaped sensor there, on the scanner there should be a L bracket that goes between the sensor
