Replacing bearinon spindle housing

Remove deck and place on two boxes or saw horses so that you can access both top and bottom of bolts holding spindle housing. Remove drive pulley from spindle. Remove cutting blade. Remove four bolts holding spindle housing to deck frame, noting which way grease nipple is pointing. Take spindle housing off and scrub deck frame clean of rust etc and also clean housing with wire brush. To remove bearings, look for retainers such as nuts or circlips. Remove these and ensure that the shaft is clean so bearing can be slid off. Apply CRC or light oil to assist bearing removal. Use a vise and set jaws wide enough that the bearing outside can fit between. This is usually 45 to 50mm. [1 3/4" to 2"] Place a hard wood block [or something that will not bruise the thread such as solid nylon] and screw nut well on to thread but make sure there is space for movement between nut and bearing. Firmly tap spindle end. Shaft should go down into top bearing and bottom bearing should start to emerge between vice jaws. Make sure that there is always space between nut and bearing before knocking end of shaft again. To knock top bearing out, place it on bottom over vise jaws and take a length of wood such as a section of broom handle and knock it out. Normally there should be no seals on the inside of these spindle bearings as they are greased from a grease gun thru the grease nipple.

Blade loose cannot get spindle off

Sounds like you should remove the deck, flip it upside down and use the blade to hold the spindle while you remove the bolt. if its still too hard to remove, spray it with wd40 or liquid wrench and wait a while and try it again.

Need to change the spindles on model 917.273220 craftsman tractor

The job is much easier and safer with compressed air and an impact. I would try really hard to find someone with air to borrow but if no air is available then wedge a piece of 4x4 between the blade and deck to keep the blade from spinning. BEWARE, the board can pop out and the spinning blade can be dangerous. Remove the deck from the unit. Remove the pulley first, hold the blade with your hand ( only if you have air/ impact) to prevent the spindle from spinning. Note the washer under the pulley. Then remove the blade, then the spindle bolts. Most AYP replacement spindles now come pretapped but if not place spindle in a vice and use one of the old spindle bolts ( they are self tapping) to make threads in the mounting holes. Then mount the new spindle in reverse order being sure to instal the washer between the spindle housing and the pulley. Again hold the blade with one hand and securely tighten the pulley nut with an impact. Also the unit probably has a blade brake arm and the spring holder is mounted by one of the spindle mounting bolts. Pay attention to its positioning before removal. If you have a heavy duty replacement spindle the notch on the bracket may not fit the new spindle. with a file or grinding wheel enlarge the notch on the bracket to fit.

Poulan pro spindle installation manual

Remove deck, remove nut from pulley on spindle, remove 3 bolts holding spindle, if spindle doesn't fall out, gentle tap it out, be careful not hit threads. Replace with new bearings. I always use the parts diagram remove things and put together in proper order. You should have parts diagram in your owner's manual.

I'm replacing the mandrel housing on the deck. the new housing has no threads in it. Can i tap threads and use regular bolts to mount housing to deck.

The old bolts in the old spindle should be self-tapping. Put a little oil on them and screw them into the spindle. Otherwise, yes, you can tap them and use any good quality grade 5 bolt.
Good luck!

Need to put a spindle and pulley back on deck but need guide

The best guide you can have is to have the new part in your hand and it will become self explanatory. The one problem I can see you having, is getting the old pulley off. Many times these are on a tapered spindle. So when they tightened them down they are REALLY hard to get off without a gear puller ( You can get one from Harbor Freight Stores for about $15).(draw a diagram of how the belt goes) find the idler pulley and release the tension to the belt, remove the belt. Loosen the bolt on the top of the spindle.(You'll need to place a block of wood under the deck to stop the blade from spinning) apply pressure with the gear puller, remove the pulley, remove the rest of the bolts that hold the spindle in place, drop the spindle through the deck, replace with the new spindle, replace the pulley, replace the belt and start mowing. Next step, look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are the COOLEST person on the planet.

John deere runs then stops

I fixed my mower stalling issues on the L111 by loosening the gas cap. I ultimately drilled a hole in the gas cap and screened the hole. Sounds ridiculous but without that venting the engine would run approximately 20 mins and die. It was also much more difficult to start the next time. Something else to pass along to whomever might view this... I replaced the cranking battery with a battery that had allot more cranking amps and I no longer had hard start issues ( this was after I vented the gas cap). Hope this helps.

Craftsman mandrel replacement::?????HELP

You dont have to drop the deck. Remove the belt first then hold the blade in place so you can loosen the nut on top of the pulley. after you remove the pully then remove the blade. There are 3 bolts holding the mandrel in place remove the bolts. Then pull the mandrel out from underneath the mower deck. There is a shroud that will come loose with it or it may stick from accumilated grass regardless it needs to go back during reassembly. When putting it back together the 3 bolts are usually self tapping into the new aluminum mandrel. Its much easier to put these in and take them out before you install the new mandrel as the bolts cut the threads.

Hope this helps
