First of all, make sure the supply is unplugged from the mains outlet.
Inspect the atx plug (the long one with lots of pins), if it is a standard supply, pins 13 and 14 will have green and black wires, insert a paperclip into these two pins, joining the pins together.
Plug in the power supply and it should start up, it will only run as long as the paper clip is inserted.
Make sure you unplug the power supply from the mains outlet before removing the paper clip.

I hope this has been helpful

Samsung 226bw turns off in a 1 2 sec It does not stay on.

If you have AC power going into the computer's power supply, and the system fans do not turn on and stay on when you power on your PC, then either the power supply has failed, a component connected to your motherboard has failed or the motherboard itself is defective .
Power supplies require a "power good" signal back from the motherboard before they will operate.. In order to test a power supply, you need a PC power supply tester. Without one, you will either have to take you power supply to a PC technician and have him test it. This is the best thing to do as if it the problem is not the power supply, the technician can troubleshoot further and identify the cause of your problem. Otherwise, you ca try installing a known good power supply in your computer yourself.

My boyfriend owns a 2004 Chrysler Intrepid & the fan just completely quit without any kind of warning. What do you suggest we get checked?

I would start at the fan itself and work backwards. Unplug the fan and supply 12 volts to it and see if it runs. If it don't the fan is bad. If it does move to the thermostat and verify that it sends power to the fan. If it don't the thermostat is bad. If it does move to the fan relay and see if it sends power or not. All the power test can be done with a test light except for manually supplying power to the fan.

RE ASUS P5S800-VM Motherboard.. system will not power up.. processor heatsink fan does not power up ... but ... removing processor and pressing power switch fan does work.. what is the problem??

Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

[There are three main power rails in the SMPS for your desktop computer.
A) The 3.3 Volt power rail
B) The 5 Volt power rail
C) The 12 Volt power rail ]

1) ALL of the LED lights on at once use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power.
Just depends on what Processor it.

Remove the Processor, and you will have power to light LED lights, and spin fans.
Of course without a Processor operating, you have No computer.

Replace the Power Supply.

Do you have a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply available to use for a test unit?

Need guidance in replacing, or suggestions for Power Supply's to choose from, post In a Comment.

My computor screen is black pc tower has green light on abut no fans are running what has gone wrong . i took caseing off and cleaned all dust but plugged back in and no fans

The first thing I would check is the power supply. It sounds like it has just enough power to turn on some lights, but not enough to power up fans, motherboard, CPU, etc. So either test the Power supply, or just purchase a new one. They are pretty cheap these days.

My cpu got a power surge during a lighting storm an burned up my power suplie ive replaced it an now the power light will come on when i push the power button on and the fan on the mother board works but...

In addition to your power supply, your motherboard was also probably affected by the surge. Most surges do damage beyond the motherboard. The power supply is still supplying power to it, which is why the fan runs and power lights come on, but it probably isn't doing much more then that. You might want to start looking for a motherboard replacement. The best and most inexpensive place is www.tigerdirect.com.

No power

Did the service tech actually look at the computer? I don't know how anyone could make this diagnosis without doing some testing. It could be the motherboard but it could be something else too. I would first suspect the power supply. They frequently go bad. Test that.

PC keeps on restarting

Power supply can be your issue , when windows boots from CD it a mear dos-mode boot , If it was motherbaord problem it wouldn't boot at all . If you move power supply to test the motherboard issue just make sure it enough power to boot the other motherboard ( some pwer supplies can boot all motherboards )

First, Make sure you by the right motherboard screws to lift the board from the case or youll ground out and blow the power suply or the mainboard or both.

You can buy power supply testers at most computer stores for around 13 to 20 bucks and test the power supply.

The one i use for work tests the power supply and the board and shows the voltage output, it was $16.

If both test good, then try connecting everything first and then connect the power supply. Make sure the Pins for the reset and power swithc are connected correctly.

Do you know the processor to be good?

Also try reseating the RAM in the slots on the mainboard, check that the metal pins for the processor arent bent underneath.

Some boards have the wide connector and the small four pin connector and some only have just the wide one depending on the its power requirments. make sure both are connected if it requires both.

Make sure the BIOS battery isnt dead. its on the Mainboard and looks like a watch battery. Pop it off and stick your tongue on it and see if you taste a charge ( you know, like with the old 9v rectangle batteries when we where kids)

You may just have a bad board or not a power full enough power suply for that board. It could als be that.
s

I would reccomend you get a power supply tester. I have one that was $16 and has both the 20/24 pin and the 4 pin Mobo tester for the power supply and it will test the power supply and the it will test through the mother board to show if its getting a solid 12 volts of power. It also has a floppy and a sata and the 4 pin tester for the drives and Mobo and is worth the money. Heres the one i got at a local ma and pop store in San Antonio Texas. You should be able to buy similar at any tech store. good luck.
