"Open With" box concerns when Windows can not find any linked programs with that file extension. But you have stated that you are unable to execute the .exe files also. I think you have installed MS-Office on your computer and still you are unable to run that application in any way. This indicated that your system files have been corrupted due to acute virus infection. The only way to get rid of this trouble is to repair your Operating System (if possible) or to go for a direct re-installation of your OS(formatting) and use a recommended anti-virus after a clean-format for whole future. If and only if you are using Genuine Windows, I recommend you to use Microsoft Security Essentials as anti-virus, otherwise, go for any custom anti-viruse available in the market. You can use McAfee or NOD32 or Norton as antiviruses. But as the free anti-viruses are concerned, you can use AVG or Avast, whichever you like the most. But I recommend you to use AVG personally.

Download these antiviruses from below by clicking over the links:

  1. Microsoft Security Essentials
  2. AVG
You can download the 64 bit version by scrolling to bottom of the page.

Let me know if this helped you in any way,
Hope this helps,

Mrityunjay.

Whenever I try to download and open a new program, the computer asks me to choose a program to open it with.

Hi golfnutz
Usually a file is opened by a program that specifically handles that kind of file, for example MS word opens (amongst others) .doc files and .rtf files MS Excel opens .xls and .xlsx files.
A downloaded program would normally need to be installed before you can use it, if the program files are in a compressed format then they will need to be extracted before they can be installed.
Try right clicking on the files and if the menu that opens includes the option to extract all then select that.
You should be able to tell what sort of file you are trying to open by looking at the file extension, program files usually end with the extension .exe.

PROBLEM OPENING MS WORD: This might be a backwards

Uncle, you found a great workaround to fix this problem. If you would like a more permement solution, try the one below. I found this answer here: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/136470-Word-2007-ERROR-quot-There-was-a-problem-sending-the-command-to-the-program-quot

It sounds as though the DDE setting for the .doc and/or .docx extensions are broken.

You might want to "re-register" Word's file extensions, which simply involves using the /r startup switch. This article provides more than anyone really needs to know: How to use startup command line switches to start Word 2010, Word 2007, Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000. In brief:

Close Word
Start > Run > winword.exe /r {ENTER}

Does that fix it?

If you want to try manual surgery and are running Windows XP, you can view/edit the setting from Windows Explorer or My Computer: Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > [appropriate extension] > select open then edit or modify. If you uncheck the "Use DDE" box and save, then the registry should be updated.

Hi, I've just installed Microsoft Office Publisher 2010 on my PC (Vista Basic). It works fine and everything. However the saved publisher files have icons like blank pages and won't open automatically...

Hello:
You can manually locate Microsoft Publisher when going to the "open with" dialog. Follow the steps below:
  1. Right click on a Publisher file.
  2. Choose "Open With..."
  3. Choose "Choose Default Program..."
  4. A dialog box will open. There is a list of programs at the top.
  5. Near the bottom of the dialog box, there should be a link that says "Browse..." Click it.
  6. You need to locate the Microsoft Publisher Program. For Office 2010, it should be at:
x86: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14\MSPUB.exe
x64: C:\Program FIles (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office 14\MSPUB.exe
7. Click once on the file and choose "Open" 8. Check the box called "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" 9. Confirm your selections and click "OK" at the bottom of the dialog box.

Generally  this error occurs because you have deleted your word.exe & excel.exe files to confirm of deletion of these application file you can check by following pathway.  If they are not there means you should restore deleted file from Recycle Bin.

      "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11

Not working

Do a file search for cmd.exe and then you can create a shortcut on your desktop pointing to it and then in double quotes put the location of the application you are trying to execute, ie.. It should be located on c:\windows\system32 - cmd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe - in Properties Target and put this in double quotes and then your application with the full path in double quotes after that.
