If this a brand new unit then in your package with the warranty and instructions on how to use it there should be a stiff piece of paper (like construction paper stiff) that card will have your number to register it. Look through the paper work you got with your unit it should be there. If not then you can contact garmin direct here is their website look under support there are phone numbers and email address's for tech support.

If this helps me out please leave me some feedback.

Where do i find seriual number? how do i register my gps ? and how do i downdload 2011 maps?

depends on your unit... The Nuvi serial number is on the bottom of unit where it connects to the cradle to mount, Garmin also puts a number sticker on the Box your Nuvi came in.

you must first Register your unit to update and unlock your maps with Garmin

with the unit off

Plug in your GPS to your computer using the USB connector cable.... your computer will detect new hardware

now go to and Register your unit get updates for maps and Firmware there,

Garmin will detect your unit and let you download WebUpDater utility to transfer maps

Have garmin nuvi 265w forgot security code

Have you ever had it Registered?
If not you have to before any maps are loaded...... with the unit off connect the GPS to your computer using the USB connector cable...(its the same usb connection a camera uses connecting to a computer)..
Once your computer detects your GPS it will say new hardware found
go to and Register your unit
Garmin will also detect your model number and let you unlock the maps and firmware
FYI where you set up the GPS will be your SECURITY LOCATION if you ever lose your pin number you would have to travel back to the security location to unlock your unit

What will i need to down load maps

To download a map you need to connect your satnav to a computer with the usb cable. Go to If you haven't already registered your satnav with garmin you'll need to do so. You'll have to create a username and password to register. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again if you need to update the map or buy new maps again.
If you don't have webupdater installed you'll need it. It can be downloaded from When you've registered click on My Garmin, then on MyMaps. If there is an update for the map on your satnav it will be shown there. Click get update. You'll need a credit card to pay for it. Map sizes can be very big e.g. europe is around 4 Gb so you'll need a broadband connection to download it. If you don't have broadband you can order it on DVD.
If it's a map of a new country you want Click on MyMaps and then click Shop for more maps an follow the prompts.

If I have a new nuvi 1490 pre loaded with Europe and i want to use another map how do I do it without overwriting the preloaded map?

Go to If you haven't already registered your sat nav on the site you'll need to do so. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Write them down as you'll need them again. Once registered you'll be able to log in to My Garmin. Click on My Maps and you'll have an option to buy other maps. If there's not enough space for both maps you'll be able to select what you want.

Garmin nuvi 1300 Query

Usually they come preloaded with some maps and you purchase additional ones. Check the manual that came with it or the box and that should tell you which ones it has. Generally speaking a basic unit bought in the UK will come with UK & Ireland preloaded, more expensive unit may have UK, Ireland & Europe and the most expensive may have all three plus USA. It's unlikely you will have 'lost' your USA map. The unit should have a 'drop down' menu which allows you to choose which map to load. Hope this helps!

Just bought a new 255w nuvi; how long do i initially charge the unit; do i then go outdoors to load maps? where can i find updates?

hello no you dont need to go out to load maps and they can be bought from computer shops or downloaded from your navmans website, i also suggest to leave your navman on charge about an hour after it had registered full for the first time.

Loading Topo maps...210 says invalid base map??

To get the base map and to get your unit functioning again:
Install the firmware again:

Go to:

Or, if this doesn´t work, go to, click on"support", click on "legacy products" (left) and click on "eXplorist210 Europe" (do NOT click on "eXplorist 210 North America")

On this page click under Updates/Upgrades on "version 2.57", and follow the instructions. You will have to register your GPS, register it under a European country.

After you have installed the firmware you will have the basemap and some new windows on the GPS. Good luck and enjoy!

Navman maps , loading new maps through windows vista ??????????

I just had same problem while trying to load 2008 maps onto N40i . This I unfortunately discovered once I had already removed the existing maps as instructed part of install.

SmartST2006 isn't so smart! It kept saying I wasn't connected to internet when it was registering my product key' despite it most definitely being connected and I had temporarily disabled my AVG firewall just in case it was blocking.

I found an alternative way of registering the maps on the Navman website where it is required to enter the Navman serial number and the maps product key in order to get a code but that didn't work for me either, it didn't recognise my Navman serial despite having been fully registered when new.

My final (desperate) solution worked - find a computer with Win XP install SmartST2006 and hey presto! It took quite a while to load the maps though.

Proof to me that SmartST2006 is not compatible with Vista, if only they had put a slip in the maps box warning of this possibility.

The 'latest' pan Europe maps which are labeled 0408 actually appear to be 1106
