Sears Kenmore Model # 5186 Problem with stitch length

Hi, My Mom gave me her old Sears Kenmore sewing machine, model # 5186 because my machine was on the fritz. I got it already to use, put the bottom knob on S for straight stitch and the stitch length knob WOULD turn, but not adjust the stitch length. No matter what number I put it on, it gives me the same super small stitch ... too small for my fabric. I have no idea where to start to fix it. Please help.. now I have two non-working machines :(

I don't have the same problem but I do have the same machine and all I want is a manual for it so I can't operate it properly. My Dad bought it for me over 30 yrs. ago and I decided to start sewing again. Please help with things costing as they do I don't want to invest in a new one. Thanks

I need to know what the settings need to be on the Kenmore 158 machine to use the buttonholer?

You'll have to provide more information about the sewing machine. 158 indicates the manufacturer. However, there are a lot of Kenmore sewing machines from that manufacturer. The 158.1340 manual is available here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/150291/Kenmore-1340.html .

Page 40 (41 in the linked format) begins the section on buttonholes. With the buttonhole attachment, you need to set the stitch to the second narrowest zig-zag stitch. You can use any stitch length. The description of using the buttonhole attachment starts on page 45.

Without the buttonhole attachment, you set the stitch selector to each part of the buttonhole as you reach them. The stitch length dial has to be set to an appropriate length in the block for buttonholes. The top and bottom tack bars use the same stitch selector. There are separate ones for the left and right sides of the button hole.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the rest of the model number on your sewing machine for specifics with your machine.

Does my kenmore sewing machine Model number 5151 do zig zag stitch?

I was able to find this photo on the internet. If your machine looks something like this

Kenmore sewing machine in cabinet model 117 305 Collectors Weekly

Photo gallery Stitch in Time Must Liquidate EstateSales org

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=25&ved=0ahUKEwjXk5Gy3ZTMAhXhyIMKHaaSA_w4FBAWCEEwBA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.searsarchives.com%2Fhistory%2Ffiles%2Fsewing_id.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEavJEwfhMVnix2pT0kwej_RSZ33A&cad=rja

then it most likely has zig-zag. There are a lot of dials and levers on this machine. Most straight stitch machines have only one or two. One dial/lever with numbers from 0-4 or 5 would be the stitch length. The other dial/lever with numbers from 0-4 or 5 would be stitch width, which would make a zig-zag stitch.

You can go to Sears Parts and get a manual.

They should have the manual there.

Hope this helps.

How to change stitch length on j c penny kenmore model 6945

Kenmore is a "Sears" brand.

Try your search on the Sears/Kenmore parts area. Or call the kenmore hotline. (usually the stitch length is marked from 0-6 or so.) Depending on the year of the machine... it could be near the reverse button.

I just got an old Sears Kenmore Sewing machine model 385.17781. Everything is working fine except the reverse stitch. When the reverse button is pressed, the fabric doesn't move or sometimes movin

it sounds like the feed dogs & the reverse button need to be
checked at a repair shop,
to see why they are not responding to each other.

My Kenmore sewing machine model number is 17630, & when I try to set the stitch length from a Straight Stitch setting to a Straight STRETCH Stitch setting, there isn't any difference. I have the length...

Take a look at the stitch length dial. If you turn that dial counter clockwise (to about 7 o'clock), it will set to stretch stitch. Then all of the stretch stitch features will work. When you want to go back to straight stitching, just move that dial back to what ever stitch length you wish.

My Sears Kenmore 1751 siz-zag sewing maching will only sew in reverse. A few minute ago it was sewing fine in both directions. The button I push to make it sew in reverse doesn't feel like it is...

these older cam machines have grease in then that can jam up the cams if you can get the covers off soak the machine with wd-40 and play with the reverse and stitch length if it breaks free try and soak up as much of the wd-40 as you can and then put sewing machine oil in the machine

Moon stitches

Make the stitch width wide and the stitch length very short. It will take a bit of practice with the widths and lengths but you will get it.
Good luck.
