Can't open the door after cooking. - KitchenAid Microwave Ovens

When I press the KitchenAid microwave door button after cooking, the light inside the oven comes on as usual but the door does not open. I feel the button does not go in all the way when pressed. (Even if I buy the repair kit as the first expert mentioned how can I use it when the door is closed tightly?)

Hi. well this can happen if the door safety interlocks are activated, either because there is a valid reason, a fault etc, or a non-valid reason there has been a breakage of a linkage or similar.
So IF the door is stuck and locked closed and there is no way to open it, then there is little alternative, other than to have the MW looked at by a professional.
If the door is staying closed for some time after cooking, but then will open some time later, well then this maybe a problem unfolding, and i would expect it to get worse and worse until complete failure.
(The interlocks are put on the door to stop them being opened and the MW still stay on, and possibly emit microwaves out from the doorway, possibly causing harm to the user.)

MW's are one device, imho, that MUST be serviced by a professional, (MW's kill more servicemen a year than any other single thing!) So it is my professional advise is to contact a Kitchenaid, either a local or head office, and ask them for a referral to an authorised servicing center. Now, when there, FIRST ask them for a "Quote" as to the cost and type of repairs involved.
This way you can first make an informed decision as to repair or replace. i say this as many many clients of mine these days prefer to put any monies that may have been spent on repair, be put towards a NEW unit, with a full warranty. Further new research has shown too, that repaired units will always fail again in average within 12 - 18 month after repair.. So?

Hi drkwanglee,

Have you notice if, when you are pressing the open button if it goes in however, the door latches do not release? If this is the case, then most likely the open release lever is already broken. But in most cases if the door can't be opened it's a broken release lever. You may order the release lever for your KitchenAid Microwave Oven on this site. Make sure to have the specific Model Number of your machine. You may also call them directly at 1-877-477-7278, everyday from 7:00 am - Midnght EST. They do have parts for KitchenAid Microwaves. Once you got the new part you may download owner's guide and installation manual here. Just enter the model number. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself contact a local repair man in your area.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

A GE model wes1450dm1bb microwave cooks and stops, but starts when you open door. The only way to stop it is to unplug it then open door. What could be the problem?

You may have a loose, misaligned, or broken door switch mount, or an intermittent door switch.

Door switch trouble is caused mostly by slamming the door or openng the door while it's cooking instead of hitting the "Stop" pad first.

My help file on door switches is here: and you can visit my helpp site at

You can e-mail me at and include your full model number and FCC ID number from the tag in the cooking cavity.

I'll be happy to help you.

When my microwave is cooking something i press stop and open the door but its still this SAFE to be exposed to the radiation like that or what could be the problem??

It is definitely not safe to be exposed to microwave radiation like this. It can cause eye cataracts to develop. The unit has a faulty door safety interlock, which should cause it to cease cooking when the door is opened. Don't use it until it is fixed.

We own a Panasonic 1100 watt Inverter microwave. It has worked fine until recently - it has now started to "turn on" whenever the door is opened. Now, when you open the door the light...

You have a faulty door switch, the unit is not supposed to come on when the door is opened only the light. This unit may require servicing as the control board may also be at fault.

Cooking doesnt start

Generic advice follows.

Do you open the door while the machine is cooking? Do it a lot? For a long time (months)? Check your door safety interlock switches. The microswitches can not stand that type of abuse. I have personal knowledge on this. I try not to open the door until it stops, but it is hard usually to do that!!!

If you need more help, let me know.

My microwave is not working and the repair in scheduled for April 3rd. This is not acceptable. Please helop me to find how I get in touch with the department that handles scheduling.

My Panasonic 1300 W Microwave will not turn off. When I open the door after cooking it restarts and when I open the door before cooking it starts. I can stop it by pressing stop/reset before opensing the door after cooking has stopped but if I press this befroe opening the door to put a meal in to start cooking it will turn on by itself. What's causing this and is it worth fixing?

Ewave kot-131UB pops breaker

Yes, this is caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door or loose door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

If you someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:
