Question about KitchenAid Microwave Ovens
Hi. well this can happen if the door safety interlocks are activated, either because there is a valid reason, a fault etc, or a non-valid reason there has been a breakage of a linkage or similar.
So IF the door is stuck and locked closed and there is no way to open it, then there is little alternative, other than to have the MW looked at by a professional.
If the door is staying closed for some time after cooking, but then will open some time later, well then this maybe a problem unfolding, and i would expect it to get worse and worse until complete failure.
(The interlocks are put on the door to stop them being opened and the MW still stay on, and possibly emit microwaves out from the doorway, possibly causing harm to the user.)
MW's are one device, imho, that MUST be serviced by a professional, (MW's kill more servicemen a year than any other single thing!) So it is my professional advise is to contact a Kitchenaid, either a local or head office, and ask them for a referral to an authorised servicing center. Now, when there, FIRST ask them for a "Quote" as to the cost and type of repairs involved.
This way you can first make an informed decision as to repair or replace. i say this as many many clients of mine these days prefer to put any monies that may have been spent on repair, be put towards a NEW unit, with a full warranty. Further new research has shown too, that repaired units will always fail again in average within 12 - 18 month after repair.. So?

Have you notice if, when you are pressing the open button if it goes in however, the door latches do not release? If this is the case, then most likely the open release lever is already broken. But in most cases if the door can't be opened it's a broken release lever. You may order the release lever for your KitchenAid Microwave Oven on this site. Make sure to have the specific Model Number of your machine. You may also call them directly at 1-877-477-7278, everyday from 7:00 am - Midnght EST. They do have parts for KitchenAid Microwaves. Once you got the new part you may download owner's guide and installation manual here. Just enter the model number. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself contact a local repair man in your area.
Hope it helps.
Thank you for using Fixya.
