Thanks Tony, very helpful. I am sending the radio to the Cobra service center and as you stated they informed me that I would have to have the entire faceplate replaced, $40.00 is the cost with shipping. Thanks again, Bruce

Hello,
The Nightwatch feature is actually AC feed. The wire harness runs from the faceplate to a box. That box is a DC to AC converter. Replacing the bulb in the meter should have no bearing on the NW feature. They do frequently go bad and in such a case the entire faceplate has to be replaced. Often times the faceplate will have a peeling or a bit of black color on the backside of it when the NW feature goes bad. If you have a watt meter you can diagnose some of the parts around the NW unit to see if that be the case. If you do find you need a new NW faceplate a piece of advice, try to find someone who has a junk/parts radio for sale that the NW still works in. Often time $30-$40 will get you the radio because the NW faceplate itself cost around &80 and are hard to find.

Glad to help. That is cheap cost with shipping. The faceplate comes off with ease. Just a little plug and remove the knobs and get in there with a 1/4" drive 10mm deep socket and remove all the bolts off the knobs. The channel bolt may be a 12mm socket. The faceplate will them pull right on out. If you wanted to save a little money.

    Regards,
    Tony

check the voltage going to the lamps before you do this so that you don't have to replace them . They might just be shorted enough to have the lights go out.

The lights on the front of my nightwatch is not working but the rest is the meter and channels light up and the dimmer works just the backlighting wont whats the problem thanks

  • That Night Watch face plate is AC ran by a converter inside the radio. The LEDS are part of the face plate and sold as one unit. The face plate goes out often on these radios. In short the face plate needs replaced if you want it to light up. The radio's performance will not be effected by this. Cobra can actually switch that out fairly cheap. Cheaper than buying a face plate used on the net.

Bulb quit working replaced with new one still doesn't work

The bulb still not working after replacement, this means the new bulb is working, but its not getting power.Either is short in the wires connecting to the bulb socket or the bulb/ light switch is faulty. In most of the cases, the switch gets shorted internally and , this causes the problem.Get the connections in the switch and to the switch checked, by meter as well as visually. This will confirm the problem.--------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

My right turn light want work but everything else works what's going on

If it is just the right side and the bulb is new, it might be a short somewhere. I would check to see if the wires to the light is getting power. If not, thats your problem. You need a volt meter though.

I changed my tv bulb and now my power button is flashing yellow

I replaced the bulb and the light still blinked orange. I tried to reset the lamp meter and that didn't work. After numerous times I put the black cover on and then it worked. I think it might be some kind of safety feature. Hopes this helps someone.

Bypass head light switch and see what you get. Three items can cause your problem . The head light switch, flasher relay , shorts in circuit. I would go with switch.

1984 ford ranger keeps blowing the running light fuses. when i let it sit at idle it won't blow the fuses but as soon as i start driving with in 5 mins or so it blows.... any ideas?

short in the wires will need a wiring diagram and ohm/volt meter to locate the problem, test lights work well to.
you will need replace the fuse with a light bulb so that the power will not go away. and you will have to search for power going straight to a ground source.
usually a raw wire from rubbing somewhere. can do a quick visual inspection first for the obvious, and then use the meter at certain points till you find a volt drop.

No front panel lighting

The "nightwatch" lighting uses an EL or electroluminescent material that does degrade with age. If the radio is old, then it may be lighting very dimly (check in a dark room with the dimmer at full bright). The material is connected by a ribbon to a special high voltage pulsed powersupply that runs at about 500 volt. If the power supply is working then a new face would be in order or a new radio. If the powersupply is not working it may be repairable but requires working with surface mount components. Either way, it is NOT a simple lightbulb fix. I have successfully repaired and do stock the smc components to repair but cannot get the faces through cobra ($$$). More info? Contact through www.cbshop.info
