Question about Porter Cable Garden

Open Question

I have a hardly used Porter Cable Model 862 Drill. The charger, Model 8621 will not charge my new 8620 batteries I bought recently. I new the charger had a problem, but I banked on the possibility I could repair or replace the charger when I bought the battery. Can you help? Vernon Deane

SOURCE: makita dc1804f charger will not charge new i-mh 1834 18v battery

I think your tryiong to charge NIMH batteries oon a charger designed for Lithium Ion batteries. With all the new style batteries such as NICAD, NIMH and LI-ION, charging becomes difficult. Most chargers pre NIMH and LI-ion, were designed for NICAD's. The best advise, match your batteries with the correct charger

My batteries are dead, can I connect the step down wall charger directly to the contacts for the battery inside the handle and use it like that?

This can be so frustrating. The power available from the charger is not enough to operate the drill motor at load. After going through several NiCad drills, chargers and batteries I ended up getting a Lithium battery drill that is so far about two years old staying healthy a lot longer.

I have rigged a 12 vdc version of a NICad drill to a lighter plug and used it in the car. Alligator clips ended up working better but the power loss in the wires defeated the real benefit.

Porter Cable makes a drill PCCK600LB (The part numbers are tricky the one listed is the one to buy) I had had a opportunity to work with the less powerful model PCC601 and was impressed. This model is the more powerful version and I'm super happy with it. It comes with two batteries that are high output, Orphan drills no case or batteries are available e-bay for pocket change. I purchased the low end version( PCC601) to go with this model using the second battery from the first drill. One for the drill and this one for the driver.

Porter cale drill and two batteries got wet they wont hold charge bought two new batteries they do same thing even tried them in the sawsall still does not hold charge for maore than a couple minutes...

If the charger got wet, or you tried to charge batteries that got wet... yes. Replace the charger, and throw away or recycle the water damaged batteries. I know thats not what you wanted to hear, but look at the bright side! The drill is most likley fine!

This is common on all brands. If the battery is dropped or gets to much moisture in it , it will ruin it. You don't know how many times it was dropped or slammed around during shipment or on the store shelves.

I am having problems with my 18v porter cable cordless drill. I have had it for two year and have rarely used it. Only used one battery. Now I am unable to charge either of the batteries. They are lithium....

Do not try to repait the battery. There is a possibility you could fix it but don't try it. Acid is not friendly on humans body.
go out and buy new batteries for it. I would suggest you buy the type of battery it came with.
One more thing; Make sure you remove the battery and store it in a normal temperature area anytime it is not in use.

Please rate if this helped you.

Porter cable 18 v lithium battery, red flash on charger, won't charge

How old is the battery and do you store it in the cold. Cold is no good for the batterys but if its flashing that its trying to change and the problem may be with the charger if there not more then 3or 4 years old and were not left in cold conditions and the lithium battery haven't been out for much longer then that. Ihave the same gun and for a year its worked vary well with the 7 inch saw and i use them a lot.

My porter cable 19.2v model 8605 battery charger

Porter Cable has not offered a replacement for their poorly designed 19.2V chargers. I had the same problem and happen to like my drill and circular saw. I found a universal charger called a model number CHUN-2420. Google it--I got mine for $27 plus shipping. All you need to do to make this work is splice 3 wires.

My charger is a PC model 8624, so the instructions might vary slightly between the chargers. Remove the six screws on the bottom of your PC charger. Remove the bottom section. Remove the screw(s) that attach the circuit card to the plastic housing. Disconnect the 3 pin white charging connector from the circuit card, and cutoff the connector. Discard the circuit card and power cord. Cut the 3 conductor (red/yellow/black) cable coming out of the Chun-2420 approximately 2' from the charger. Splice these three wires to the three wires in the charger housing that connect to your battery. In my situation, Red/Red, Yellow/Yellow, White/Black. To verify, red=positive, black/white=negative, yellow=temperature sensor. Wrap the red/yellow/black cable with electrical tape where it exits the PC charger through the power cord hole. Re-attach the bottom.

Did you put the battery into the charger in the correct way? Is charger plug into outlet that has electrical power "ON"?
