Question about kawasaki Fh641v 21hp 21 Hp Riding Lawn Mower Engine ()

I have a HusqvarnaYTH1848XP lawn tractor with a KawasakiFH531VA41518 engine fitted. I have had coil problems in the past and have replaced both. The engine is now running roughly with loss of power and disconnecting both coils makes no difference. It will run ( poorly) without either lead attached ( both leads off). Where can the spark be coming from? Dave

need more info , your description says that engine will run without ht leads being connected to plugs ?

most times if plugs are connected and key turned off , engine will run on then eventually stop and can sometimes even reverse its rotation when it does so which is known dieseling or run on

if the plug leads are off and the engine continues to run the only way it may run is if it has carbon glowing on the piston top or cylinder combustion chamber

Ignition Theory of Operation

Mounted to the periphery of a flywheel are a pair of magnetic poles (south leading in clockwise rotation), generated by

a permanent magnet. By rotating the flywheel (magnetic poles) clockwise past the ignition module on a laminated core group, a voltage is generated in the primary winding (L1).

This generates a small bias current to flow through the control resistor (R1) to the base of (Q1). This base drive causes

the transistor to conduct (turns on) completing the primary circuit. Current flows from the high side of the primary winding

through the transistor (collector to emitter) to ground.

The trigger sensor (TS1) senses the optimum time (peak current) to remove the base drive from the transistor (Q1).

This abrupt "turning off" of the transistor causes an interruption in current flow which allows its associated flux collapse,

and several hundred volts is induced through the primary winding (L1) inducing a very large voltage in the secondary

winding (L2).

When the secondary voltage reaches several thousand volts the spark plug (SP) gap is ionized and ignition

occurs. The placement of the trigger sensor internal to the ignition insures constant timing over speed and temperature

and prevents counterclockwise operation.

The diode (D1) in the ignition shut off circuit blocks inadvertent application of battery voltage, protecting the internal

components of the ignition. With the stop switch (SW) in the closed position primary voltage is routed to ground, preventing ignition operation.

has anyone had the wiring connectors apart in / and around ignition and charging systems?

Tractor runs, but cuts off if you try to engage the blades (and not in the usual hesitant way it did normally if the engine speed was not high enough at first start)

Had same problem on my 115 automatic. Tried lots of things but the fix was replacing the coil making sure for proper spacing. Documents with new coil will tell you and should have a card with proper spacing. Instant power, instant fix! Good luck!

Fitted new coil to briggs and straton 16 twin but have no spark

unplug the wire that comes from the tractor then check for spark if you do then stat by checking he safety switches

Have your mechanic set your intake/exhaust valves at .004 when piston is 1/4 inch past top dead center on compression stroke.

At that age, it's highly likely that there aren't any! You don't say what engine is fitted, but if it's a Briggs or a Tecumseh, they went solid state in 1982. If that's the case, just replace the coil module.

I have a 19.5 b/s turbo cool and the engine gets hard to turn by hand at T.D.C. with spark plugs out . I also need imfo. on how the gov. works inide the engine.

Set the valves at .004 when piston is 1/4 inch down from TDC, This is to help with cranking when plugs are in but not sure why its hard to turn past TDC when plugs are out,could be from coil or coils conntacting flywheel magnets.

Craftman 18hp briggs @srat starts then cut off when it gets hot

I hope all that time and money was worth it - there are classic symptoms of a blocked gas cap vent. Vacuum forms in tank - no fuel flow - engine stalls. Wait a bit - air leaks in, engine starts again (for a while.....).

To completely elimnate a chassis wiring issue, simply disconnect the mag cable from the engine. The only possible culprit if there are still electrical problems is the coil itself - which you already replaced.

I have a simplicity model 4211 lawn tractor with no spark.

terry, check for kill line on motor to see if grounded out,you can remove from ground clip.
also you say you checked points??????
check for flywheel to coil pickup clearance .
point type coil to flywheel the airgap should be 25- 1000ths with feeler guage. on electronic ignition coil to flywheel pickup the air gap should be set @ 10-1000ths with feeler guage. hope this solves your problem..........lemmee kno.....chris

19.5 HP brggs engine (craftsman) shuts down after long runs.

Sounds like the coil,pull the shutoff wire off the coil and try it.if you still dont have spark replace coil.
