1 Answer

My gateway EC3081i laptop do not charge 100%. actually, the battery is new as I have replaced the old one. BTW i replaced the old one since my battery is charging uptp 88% only. However, the same problem occur when I replaced a new batter

The A/C adopter is 19v =3,42A while the battery is 5,42A. May be this is the problem. But i could not figure out why there is a battery problem now since i am using the same type of battery - same as the old one.

Actually, my laptop is still covered under warranty. That is why gateway service center has replaced a new battery for my laptop. however it's really annoying since i could not figure out what is the problem even gateway customer service center could not fix this problem.

Please compare the Volts AND Amp ratings on BOTH the laptop (underside) AND the A/C adapter.
IF they don't match, then battery may not charge to full capacity.

Example: 19V, 3.9Amp

My Gateway laptop, NE56R1u, shuts down automatically when unplugged even though fully charged?

Dear Leslie,

I had the very same problem with a HP Pavillion DV4 laptop and the problem was inside the battery - one of its cells became defective and the charge did not last more than a few seconds - it also showed a 100% charged icon but the battery was depleted in seconds.

Before buying a brand new battery you could check with a friend that has a similar laptop if he/she can lend you his/her battery for a few minutes and check whether the laptop keeps on or not with that other battery. In the case it remains on, it is the battery for sure, and you will need to buy a replacement one. Check the link below, for one option.

Hope you may find this information useful!

Yes to re-install Windows.

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

The batterycould be old.
lithium batteries does not go dead when old
You simply cannot get the energy it stores.
That isthe draw back with them.
Other wise they would probably last forever.

Hi,
Yes you are right, a defective battery.
It's always recommended that you use manufacturers endorsed hardware because of this fact!!
Return the battery and get a new one. when you get the new battery don't charge it, just use it until its dead and then recharge it. It will then hold 100% charge.

Good luck

How old is the battery? If this laptop is a couple of years old, you may need a replacement, depending on how many recharge cycles have been done.
