Question about Sony VAIO RB30C (VGCRB30) PC Desktop

2 Answers

I have a soy vaio rb30, the psu died and I replaced it with a bestec equivalent, since then you can only turn on or wake the computer by turning off and on the power button on a power strip, the button on the cpu does seem to send some signal but it wont turn on until you toggle the power, any ideas?

what i mean to say is - If the cpu is off and you press the power, nothing happens even though there is a constant green light on the psu, then pull out and plug back in the power cord or turn the power off and on at an outlet the computer starts up. If you toggle the power to the cord without pressing the power button first, nothing will happen - so the button does something at least, but wont power it up without messing with the power. I put an inline on/off switch in the cord which does the trick but is obviously not the right answer

that sounds more like it, will get back to you tomorrow - Thanks

  • Tony Wilson Apr 03, 2011

Ok I tried that, i bridged the two pins and the power went off but I couldn't get it to come back on again, only with the in-line switch, when the cpu powers down the green light stays on on the psu, when you touch the power button it goes off - see videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LmltrJac...

I tried everything else, thanks to all who helped, I wouldn't get to this point without all the trial and error. Looks like it's the easiest thing to replace.

Hi!

Had the same problem on one of my clients' computer... Turned out to be a faulty PSU... Just have it replaced! I'd guess same model will do - it's just a failing unit.

Anyways, double-check the connections...

:) go to your control panel, in power options, set the power settings to desktop pc,
set turn off harddrive to never and turn off monitor to never, power management, minimal management,

in your bios you can also turn off sleep mode if you wish.

ok i now understand what you mean.. Alright ,, lets try this, open up the cpu, see the 2 pins where the power button connects, well remov ethe power button connectors. Plug in the cpu

(It will start up, why ? cause thats the default settings you have in the bios, on power loss resume last stat in the power settings options of the bios). Use a bladed screwdriver and bridge tthe two power pins together and hold, the system will cut off, repreat (without holding the bridge) ad you will boot up.. Chances atre you have a stuck power button replace it.

the PSU has Problem . It is not supplying enough voltage to boot the PC, capacitors inside the PSU are weak or damaged. Its dangerus to open the PSU coz, Capacitors have high voltage currents. If you have the Knowledge of electronics, then open the PSU and detect the Weak or Leeky Capacitors and replace them with new one( this method is for experiment and thrill) . But the replacement new PSU is better , perfect and cheaper then repairing the psu from outside. best of luck

Try this to get it at-least back on with your PSU that fits in the case. open up your computer case, locate your power supply. With the AC cord still plugged in , unplugged the connectors to your motherboard from the PSU and wait about 10secs. Then replugged them in. This should power on your PC.
Also, You wanna check around where the PSU connects to the motherboard and make sure there is no damage. No burning,Discoloration anything that could be potential damage.
Hope this works atleast to get the PC booting up.

It could be the PSU (power supply unit), one that has a fan working and where the power cord goes into. If that goes bad then the computer becomes dead as there is no power going to any of its systems. If there is any sign of life in the computer then you can try by removing the RAM and reinserting them. Or by unplugging the connector from the PSU to the mother board. But remember to plug it in in the same way that you remove it from. remember it by the color of the cables. If by mistake you turn the connector by 180 degrees then the mother board will get burnt.

Your psu is works fine.
First open cpu cabinet and find motherbord.
Pull CMOS cell from m/b for 10 minutes.
Refix RAM Memory.
Pull procesor fan and processor clean dust from all parts.
Then fix processor fan and processor.
Reconnect ATX connector to m/b.
Remove pci cards from PCI slot then check.
