If there is an issue with the pulley why does the drum empty and spin during the spin cycle?

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

Not sure if you got my previous comment. If there is an issue with the pulley why does the spin cycle operate correctly?

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

The washer fills with water and does not agitate. I can turn the dial to spin and the drum spins and empties. I by passed the switch and the drum spins. If the drum empties then the pump is working correct? The washer just does not agitate. I also removed the belt let the drum fill and the motor still hummed during the wash cycle. Is there a better way to isolate transmission problem?

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

I removed the agitator nothing broken. During wash cycle the motor is spinning with the belt off but belt does not move when reinstalled.

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

I am confused. The motor works during the spin cycle and also is spinning during the wash cycle with the belt off. When belt is installed it hums and the belt does not move. Something is binding. If the water empties during the spin cycle I would think the pump is functioning.

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

Isn't the spin cycle a load? Wouldn't a working spin cycle indicate the motor is OK?

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

In spin mode the drum stops spinning when the lid is opened

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

I by passed it. This machine agitates with the lid on.

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

    I meant lid open

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

No, the machine starts and stops the spin cycle when lid closed and opened

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

Not sure what to look for there? I have a voltmeter are you looking for voltage to the motor. Are you thinking the agitate speed is burned out?

  • davelisabloo Apr 03, 2011

    Across what wires?

Hi
When the washer will wash and wont drain or spin the issue is caused due to either of these two things...the lid switch or something clogged in the drain pump assembly...First check the lid switch assembly, you can also take out the switch and try to jump start the lid switch...if the washer spins then replace it if it does not then check the drain pump assembly. As it washes fine so I believe the control and motor is fine. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

    Hi

Is your washer spinning fine? Issue is only with agitating and not spinning correct.

If it is spinning fine and not agitating then it might be an issue with the Agitator Auger and Post Assembly, the assembly might be loose or disconnected. Inspect if the agitator is broken, remove the softener dispenser and then use a socket with a 10 inch extention remove the existing screw. Please check the video---

Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

Hi, the motor hums because the motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt which will inturn not make the washer agitate. If so, replace the pulley.

It is possible for the motor to turn without the belt turning because it is broken or due to a frozen pump pulley.....

Washer won't agitate. New transmission...new timer.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Top load, direct drive Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a reversing motor.

It turns one way for agitating and reverses for draining and spinning.

It sounds as if either the motor is shot or one of the connectors is bad.

As a place to start, see the Whirlpool Service manuasl (with wiring diagrams) for their top load, direct drive washers.

Maytag washer will not agitate. model pavt244aww

TURN THE PULLEY ON THE BOTTOM. ONE DIRECTION WILL CAUSE THE PULLEY TO TRAVEL UP AND RELEASE THE BRAKE, CAUSING THE TUB TO SPIN. TURN IT THE OTHER WAY AND THAT SHOULD BE YOUR AGITATION. YOU SHOULD HEAR THE TRANSMISSION CLUNK AS THE GEARING CHANGES DIRECTION TO GE THE AGITATION ARC. IF NO NOISE IS HEARD, YOU HAVE AN INTERNAL PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION.

Washer model PAVT244AWW agitation noise

Sounds like the motor is going bad. It will only get louder before it finally stops. There is a device that assists the agitation motion that may be bad or is going bad.
