Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Router will not connect to the internet. It stopped suddenly and has been reinstalled twice since. My laptop indicates high signal strength but no connectivity. Ditto for my desktop when connected to the ethernet port on the wireless router. Both computers connect properly when connected to the DSL modem's ethernet port.

Perform a factory reset and reconfigure the modem. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the router.
With a bent paper clip, press and hold the red reset button on the rear of the router through the small hole indicated. Reconnect the power cable with the button still pressed. Keep the button pressed for 5 to 10 seconds. Connect to the router using your wired computer (desktop) via a web browser. Type the following address: 192.168.1.1 Login using username: Admin Password is either admin, linksys, or does not have a password. Setup your DSL Login information (uses PPPoE with Dynamic IP Address). Enter your ISP login ID and password. You may be required to specify the login ID as the full e-mail address ie: b1w045562@myisp.com. Configure the wireless protection feature as WPA2 with AES encryption (shared-key) for best security. Also choose a strong password, 8 characters in length minimum and containing numbers, letters (uppercase and/or lower case) in the password. Passwords are case sensitive. Also be sure to change the default SSID from Linksys to something identifyable, but without using personal information.

mine would not connect no matter what i would do with the router. it wasn't until i finally realized that once i reset my modem that i did not change the settings back to a bridged connection. i had to connect directly to the modem, enter my ip address and then find the tab that allowed my to change it to a bridged connection. after that all was well.

Poor signal with WiFi on my zeepad

Having a wireless Internet signal in your home allows multiple devices to use the same Internet connection without having to run lengths of Ethernet cable to each device. Given that the wireless network is transmitted over the air, the consistency of your Internet connection depends on the strength of the wireless signal. If wireless signal strength is not strong enough to give you a consistent Internet connection, there are a few simple steps for finding the problem and improving your signal strength.

Reset all devices. The majority of Internet issues, including poor wireless signal strength, are very often solved by a simple power cycle of all the devices in the network. Locate the power cords of both your modem and your wireless router and remove them (if you use a modem/router combination, simply unplug the power to that device). Leave them unplugged for a full 30 seconds, plug them back in and restart your computer. When your computer fully reboots, check your wireless signal strength to see if it has improved. If it has not, further troubleshooting is required. Move your computer closer to your router, or your router closer to your computer. Wireless routers do not have unlimited range. One reason your computer may be getting a weak signal strength from your wireless network could be because your computer is simply outside of the router's range. Typically, ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will install your modem in one specific location in the house and the modem will not work at other locations, so moving the modem or modem/router combination may not be a possibility. If this is the case, you may need to move the computer to a location that is within the range of the wireless router's broadcast. If you still get poor signal strength, your router may be experiencing a malfunction. Contact the technical support department of your router manufacturer. Router malfunctions often are not the result of a bad or broken router, but of something much simpler, such as the router's needing a firmware upgrade or an incorrect setting on the router's internal setup. If your router manufacturer is unable to improve your wireless signal strength, it may be time to purchase a new router. Purchase a new router. Wireless routers are priced in part based on how widely their wireless signal broadcasts (in other words, the more expensive the router you buy, the larger a wireless signal the router will broadcast). Included in the packaging of each wireless router is the approximated range, in square footage, of that router's wireless network. A good rule of thumb is to know the square footage of your house and buy a router that can accommodate that square footage. That way, as long as the router is functioning properly, you will have strong wireless signal strength throughout your entire home. Hope this helps.

Will not stay connected to internet

This would depend on how you are connecting. If by a wireless router, check the signal strength, walls (especially thick or damp), objects with moisture like human bodies all drop signal strength because microwaves are absorbed by water. If the signal strength is good, check the routers logs by accessing the router's administration web page which usually has a statistics or log of past faults. If it is not the router or others using the router are not having the same issue. Then I'd require more information about how you are accessing the internet.
There may be software packages trying to access the Internet that are being blocked, which would block your connection.
The variables here are quite numerous.

I have the router right by my PC, it appears connected but no signal strength at all (no bars) what is wrong?

try changing the wireless channel on the router and see if that makes any difference.

Open the setup page of the router.
Go to wireless tan and change the standard channel to 11. save the settings.

You can also try updating the drivers of the wireless adapter on your computer.
If your router is too old then you must upgrade the firmware on the router.

I have the belkin router in my home and one of my laptops are not picking up the signal for the router

Hi,

Probably the Router signal strength is low.
You need to open the EWS page ( Router configuration page ) and increase the signal strength to 11 ( it must be Auto or 1,2,3, etc )

EWS Page ( Router page ) can be opened using the Router IP Address which may be 192.168.1.1 or if you know it. Open Internet Explorer and enter the ip address and hit enter ( without www or .com )

Under Wireless configuration or settings you will find the Channel Strength. You need to restart your Laptop to get connected again to the network after saving the settings are you will loose the internet connection.

Regards,
Shawn

Anything i try to watch on YOUTUBE stops and starts. I see the whole thing but in ten seconds bytes.

The video is buffering which is normal. A lot of buffering can mean an internet connection that is not quite fast enough. If you can do things that help with the performance of your internet connection, you can reduce the buffering attempts.

If you are dial-up, not much you are going to be able to do. Dial-up is not fast enough to support video.
If you are using high speed internet (DSL, cable, satellite), you can do things like restart the modem (unplug, wait 15 seconds, plug back in). If you have a router to connect mulitple PCs to your modem, you can restart the router (unplug, wait, plug in). Resetting router is especially useful if you stay connected all the time.

If you are connecting wireless to your modem/router, check the signal strength. Try to position your computer to get the best strength possible. To help boost signal, you can get hi-gain antennae for your modem/router. These will help boost the strength of the wireless signal as well as extend range.

Problems connecting remote net connection.

It sounds as if your signal strength is too low for the laptop to make a solid connection with the router. The further away you get from the router, the lower the signal gets. Any problems connecting to other access points? Places with free wi-fi like some fast food restaurants, books stores, etc? You may need to get a new router with a stronger signal strength.

Router not working as well with D620 as with my older D610

If your router has the external antenna the signal will increase when you point the antenna in the direction where the computer is used the most. It always helps to locate the router in a central area and on the upper floors of a house because the broadcast signal falls like rain. Another trick to try is to change your broadcast channel in the router, the normal default is channel 6. Each channel broadcasts at a slightly different frequency. Hope this helps...Tennis123

Wireless not working

Yes, There could be alot of things that are causing your Operating System to not obtain signal from your Wireless Router....I would first of all try troubleshooting this by;;
1st - Unplug your High-Speed Internet Modem and Wireless Router for 30 seconds apprx.
2nd - Restart your Computer.
3rd - Once your computer is logged in and at desktop, Plug-In your High-Speed Modem then wait until all lights appear that show your Modem is online then plug-in your Wireless Router then wait about 30 seconds then try to connect to your Wireless Connection.
If these do not work make sure that, you do not have your Wireless Router. I would also recommend that a way to create and obtain a signal strength that the computer can reach please go to the following website http://www.mythings.com/tips/1664/Where-to-Put-Your-Wireless-Router This should assist you with making a stronger signal strength.

Hi, I have a desktop and a wireless router. The desktop was connected to the internet via a Belkin USB wireless adaptor but it has suddenly stopped and does not pick up any signal. I have uninstalled and...

Belkin products are notorious for breaking down at a high rate. If you wanted to rule out your computer as the culprit, you could install the belking adapter on your laptop (disable the built-in one) and see if it still works. I would also suggest going here:

http://www.belkin.com/support/

and typing in your product model # and downloading the latest firmware/software for it. As always, restart your computer.

Connection problem

I attempted to access the Rogers site and it requires a postal code probably to tailor information to your specific area. According to wikipedia there are several levels of service that may come into play. Would you provide the postal code ans service level so I can research the issue on the Rogers web site?

Also please confirm if your router is a DLink DI-711 as indicated in the category this issue was posted upon.

I could probably guess as to the solution however I would like to confirm my answer before asking you to attempt it.
