Question about Starbucks Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

1 Answer

I just replaced the heating element in my Starbucks Barista Max machine. I put it back together but now I get water out of the steam wand all the time (i.e., when it should only be flowing through the coffee brewer). I thought I may have misconnected the switch leads on the steam wand, but I have tried reconnecting the leads in all combinations (there are two leads and three connecting ports on the switch) but to no avail. Have I misconnected somewhere else?

Hi
Your steam knob is out of adjustment. When you turn the knob to open it it pushes on a needle and water flows. When you close it it moves away from the needle and the needle seats and shuts off the water. The knob is too far in. Back it off a little until it closes the needle. Its usually a reverse thread.

I tried that. I backed the steam knob all the way out and still the water flows from the steam nozzle in the coffee mode

I have a starbucks barista athena that has a vapor lock. How do I fix this?

It's easy to break the vaporlock on an Athena.

  1. Power the machine off and let it cool (20-30 minutes is plenty)
  2. Place a mug under the steam wand and open the steam valve all the way. If there's residual pressure, let it release the pressure before proceeding
  3. Power on the machine and wait for a steady stream of water from the steam wand.
  4. Close the steam valve and you should be good to go!

Cannot prime pump.

I had the same problem, found the steam wand was plugged. You can screw the wand off (the crome metal tube) and then open the water valve. If you have flow take a wire and clean out the wand and your good to go.

Can't get steam from the a Starbucks Saeco Italila Digital Auto

Hi If you can get water to flow from the wand, you can descale the machine. You might have a bad steam boiler. There is also a fuse on the boiler that might be bad. Set your water hardness to 4 to keep the machine working for a long time. Descale more often than not enough.

No water flowing through steam wand

You might want to try draining the machine and filling it back up. There could be a number of different things wrong with your machine.

Water leaking from steam wand when brewing shots

Try this from another post. It should help.

The steam wand began to seriously leak but a call to Starbucks Customer Service line and I was talked through how to adjust it so that the leaking stopped. It requires taking off the top/back panel of the machine (6 philips screws) then using a small allen key (1.5 mm I believe) to loosen and adjust a plastic oblong donut-shaped thing (a "cam" actually) on the shaft of the steam knob... no more drips.
The key to prevent dripping is to open the steam knob without putting pressure on it when it gets to the full-open stop position. Cranking it too hard when it comes to a stop in the full-open position will slowly move the cam out of position. Then the shaft doesn't fully seat inside the machine anymore and won't fully shut off the water to the steam wand. Then, no matter how hard you crank the knob in the shut-off position it will still drip. The purpose of the cam is to stop the knob from complete unscrewing and it also turns the pump on and off for the steam wand. The cam adjustment is very small but completely solves the dripping problem. Seeing inside the machine made me realize how easy it would be to repair problems as long as I can get the parts from Starbucks or perhaps Saeco.

Super espresso machine leaking

Hi
Your steam manifold needs to be replaced. I still have the original in mine but if you don't cool them down after steaming they will develop hair line cracks and leak after while. To cool it down after steaming push the steam button again, then open the knob and run it till you have a steady stream of water, then close the knob.
The replacement manifolds are black and have held up very well but they have a brass manifold re[placement but you will need new mounting hardware.
