This is not the solution I am afraid. I have since discovered that the SIM card had died. I have a new SIM card and the phone works fine again.

What is the story on the refund if you don;t find a solution?

    thanks

Airplane Mode turns off all wireless communication abilities to comply with airline regulations.
So as lolg as you don't switch to normal mode you won't be able to use your phone as a modem.
Switch to normal mode.

I recommend holding down the home button to select / remove airplane mode.
