Question about Pentair MiniMax 100 Aboveground 100,000 BTU Propane Gas Electronic Heater

1 Answer

We just replaced our old minimax 100 with a new one. Plugged it in, turned on the heater and it ignited perfectly. There is water flow and it has heated up but smoke is coming out from under the coils. Is this just burnoff not to be concerned with?

I've never had smoke, but I have experienced a " smell " that burns off the first few times direct from the factory. I would call technical support to share your experience. 1-800-831-7133 or 1-888-755-7946.

Pentair 472604 Igniter Replacement MiniMax NT STD Pool and Spa Heater

The ignitor is simple to replace, It is either a spark ignitor or a Hot surface ignitor. The above link will take you to a picture of the Hot surface ignitor, it is normal held onto the bottom of the burner tray, at right about the middle, by 1 or 2 sheet metal screws.

If a Spark style ignitor/electrode, then the bottom link is the one want to look at. Again, held in place the same way as above description.

Minimax 100 runs for about 5-8 minutes and then shut off. Won't come back on for about a hour

Check your water flow. If you have an external by-pass valve it need's to be 80-90% off so water will flow through heater. Also you will need to check the internal by-pass. You can find it inside the water manifold and if the external one has been left open it can cause the internal one to go bad. With out these the water goes past the heater and the water inside the heater overheats and shuts the heater down. With nothing to divert the water flow through the heater to bring fresh cool water in it will just sit till it cools and go through the cycle again.

I have a PacFab MiniMax 100 pool heater. The pilot remains on... but the burner will not ignite unless I hit/jar the heater. Any suggestions on what may need replacement or repair?

First thing to check is the flow switch. You can bypass it temporarily, and see if it lights. DO NOT OPERATE IT WITHOUTH FLOW SWITCH. If it isn't the flow switch, then it could be the thermostat or a bad connection on this low voltage millivolt circuit.

High pressure, and heater noise

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but if the PSI on the gauge is high then the problem may not be the heater. When you have the system turned on, and the PSI is reading higher than normal, just the flow of water coming out your return lines. If the flow is normal, like when you clean your filter, then see if you have a way to re-route the water so it bypasses the heater. If the PSI on gauge drops, then the issue is in the heater.

If the flow of water is slower than normal, with the PSI reading high, then you have a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be something simple like removing debris from skimmer and pump backets, to time to backwash, or clean, the filter.

If the flow of water is really hard and fast, with the PSI high as well, then you have too much water going through the system and need to slow it down.

Hi, I have a minimax 400 heater it will only bring the spa up to 85 degrees, the power light and temp light are on.

generally if you can only reach a temp of 85 or so you may have an oversized pump and the water is flowing too quickly through the heater. it may be necessary to install a manual bypass on the heater plumbing to divert the water enough to slow the flow through the heater down
