Question about Gateway NV5378u Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Gateway laptop that refuses to do anything. No power, no lights. Nothing. The power brick is good, it puts out the right power. I've pulled the battery and tried running the laptop without it. No luck. I'm positive that replacing the motherboard would take care of this. I'd like to know if someone out there has encountered this issue before and was able to isolate this to any particular component.

There could be one of two problems here.
The DC-in jack could be bad on the motherboard. If you're competent with a soldering iron you could try replacing that.
Otherwise, I'd say you're looking at a new motherboard.

Gateway M 6843 won't turn on

You may have already done this, but remember many laptops require that you remove the battery for about 30 sec. as
well as disconnect the AC power to reset them.
Always try this when everything appears completely dead.

It shutdown as it informed because the battery was almost dead. I had it plugged in but plugged it in other places too in case it was the plug. After that it refused to power up and the power cord didn't...

This is a problem Gateway laptops can suffer from. Try running the laptop without the battery and just plugged into the mains. You may find the laptop will work ok with just a new battery on it but its difficult to say. It can be an expensive gamble as laptop batteries are not cheap.

Gateway kav60 not charging. i have to wiggle the cord and sometimes it refuses to charge.

I guess you've got a broken laptop power dc jack or power cable.

Symptoms of a broken Laptop DC power jack:

- The laptop only operates when you hold the DC power plug in a certain direction (DC jack is broken or loose).
- The laptop only runs on battery power (no power is getting through the DC jack).
- The laptop gets no power at all.
- The laptop will not charge the battery.
- The laptop switches from AC power to battery power intermittently due to a loose or broken power jack.
- The laptop suddenly shuts off.
- The DC jack may feel loose.
- Sparks come out of the back of the laptop when you insert the power plug into the DC jack.

My gateway mt6840 does not read my new battery

Have you tested your power supply to confirm it's sending out the right amount of current.A simple ac tester is all you need.On the back of your power brick it will tell you your in-put and out-put voltage requirements. If your ac adapter tests good your new battery is probally the problem.

Gateway ma7 will not power up

Gateway MA7s have dodgy DC sockets. Poor solder joint on +ve pin = increased resistance = lots of heat = burnt PCB around +ve pin usually shorting the +ve pin straight to ground. If you're lucky you might still be at the poor solder joint stage and the DC socket might simply need replacing and/or re-soldering. If not, it could be a burnt PCB and it's a pain to bypass the burnt areas due to how the power gets distributed around the PCB.

My mx6128 is dead

Check and see if your power brick's light is on. The power brick is that black block of plastic on your power cord. If that light is dead then the power brick is bad. That should be your first item to check.

Power up

Try this first, take the battery out of the laptop. Make sure the AC Adapter isn't plugged in also. Then, press and hold the power button on the laptop for about 30 seconds. Put the battery back in and turn it on. If your still not see anything, or you can just barely see some images, it could be the back-light on your LCD has gone bad.

You should try plugging in an external CRT or LCD monitor. Most laptops will automatically enable this port when you connect a monitor and reboot, but you may need to hit some combination of keys on the laptop if you don't see anything.

You should try this to see if the laptop is running properly other than the internal LCD or VGA hardware.
