Remote control do's and don'ts!

1. If you are buying a UNIVERSAL remote for some reason do not expect it to provide all the original functions or EVEN TO WORK FOR YOUR UNIT. You in most cases are better with the original---if the original does not work there are ways to deal with that.

A dead remote is usually bad batteries, dirty or loose connections or has had some liquid spilled into it.

Most remotes can be taken apart (if its dead nothing to lose here) and the circuit board cleaned with alcohol etc and the rubber like keypad washed with dish soap, dried completely and the unit usually works again.

2. NEVER STORE REMOTES WITH THE BATTERIES IN THEM FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME; the batteries can leak and a white mess similar to battery cables in a car occurs. This can be dealt with by cleaning all the white stuff out and cleaning the metal contacts by use of a small file or knife----DO NOT USE WATER etc for cleaning here.

3. Most shops have a remote tester, it is a card with a strip and when the remote is pointed at it the strip lights up (3 dollar item on the internet).

4. Lost remotes for many units are a problem----some never think to GOOGLE THE MODEL NUMBER OF THE SET with the word REMOTE after it---AVOID UNIVERSALS. Many units (TV combos, DVD, blue ray etc) MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL REMOTE for all functions to be accessed.

5. Three things for the most part cause remotes not to work: DROPPED, LIQUID SPILLED, AND BATTERY ISSUES.

Dropped is most likely to be fatal if the board inside is damaged, the other two are fixable 95% of the time.

When you do this if you have questions POST A QUESTION HERE ATTENTION SD TECH and I will be happy to help.

sd tech

My remote control for my Pro View TV suddenly quit working. Is it fixable or, if not, how can I get a new one?

The replacement batteries could be defective or installed incorrectly. If the remote cannot be revived, you can search online for several providers of replacement OEM remotes.

The remotes for my Viiper 5501 won't charge

There was an issue with these remotes when first manufactured. Try this, when initially charging the remote; plug the charger into the outlet then, plug it into the remote; remove, plug it in, remove; continue. It should take approximately six times before the remote says "charge" in the screen. If you repeat the process and the remote does not "wake up", replace it.

My TV remote doesn't work. I changed the batteries but that didn't solve the problem.

The remote can be tested and Radio Shack and most repair shops have a simple card for testing---point the remote at the card and press buttons and the strip on the card either lights up or not.

Depending on the problem most remotes are fixable.

Stay away from "Universals" as they are usually trouble.

If batteries and remote test good the set has a receiver for the infrared signal the remote sends-

95% of the time it is the remote and not the receiver or set.

A precise model number would tell me of common issues with your set including the remote.

My remote is no longer working to my insignia 42" tv

First verify whether its an issue with the tv or the remote. If you have a digital camera or a phone with a camera point it towards the front of the remote control when you are hitting a button. a red light should blink. This infrared light can't be seen by the human eye but it can through a camera. If you can see it then it's an issue with the tv which would be more costly to repair. If it's the remote try new batteries or purchase a direct replacement or universal remote.
thank you,
Lee

Remote will not work I have tried changing batteries

(1) try shining up the battery contacts - a little sandpaper/emery cloth/steel wool can clean up
even invisible oxide(s) on the surface of battery springs and contacts
(2) if that doesn't work, buy a universal remote as a replacement - the last 1 I bought was $8 at
a Dollar store - and it worked fine. But make sure that the remote supports your newer TV - alot
of older "Universal" remotes only support the obsolete analog sets along with just a (very) few
HDTV sets.
(3) as a last resort, pop the remote cover, and see if there's anything that got in there that you can
clean out to try to get the remote working. For every 10 remotes I've opened up, I've found
something fixable in about 10%. Usually they just die leaving behind no visible forensic evidence
of their COD (cause of death).

Changed batteries and now remote won't work

sometimes if the batter is of expired stock then also it does not work.also try to clean the contacts in the sockets where u insert the battery.if still does not works then its quite possible that the internal circuit of the remote has gone fasulty.so the remote now needs replacement.
