Side by side, refrigerator works, but freezer does not The freezer just started thawing everything. We can still hear something running in the refrigerator.

This is unusual. The more common set of circumstances is that the freezer works but the refrigerator doesn't. The cold air in a side-by-side is produced on the freezer side and is than transferred throughout the freezer and to the refrigerator by a fan in the freezer.

You say you hear something running in the refrigerator. This could be the freezer fan. It is located behind an access panel in the freezer. This fan should run.

You should also hear the compressor (underneath the refrigerator) running. If this doesn't run, you will not get cooling. Also, there should be a compressor fan (underneath the refrigerator close to the compressor) running. This fan removes heat from the refrigerant coils and transfers the heat to the outside. If this fan doesn't run, proper cooling cannot be obtained.

Check these things out.

Maytag refrigerator side stopped working -freezer side fine #MSD2758GEW

SOunds like it is the FF(Freezer Fan) this problem is very hard to detect as the fan will turn, but not enough to circulate the air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The minimum cost to repair/replace the fan assembly is around $300.00

Whirlpool gs2shaxnl00 freezer working but not fridge not

The possibility is that the freezer fan is not working or the passage from the freezer to the refrigerator where the fan blows the cool air from the evaporator is blocked. Also if you say you manually defrost it could be that it is not self defrosting which can also cause this problem because the evaporator will build up ice and block the flow of the fan air

Refrigerator will not defrost or cool

Either your fan is going out or you have a blockage.Replace the fan after you totally defrost it.
Make sure your fan is working ,its located behind the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked. With out a fan you have no circulation but your freezer may look likes its working becuse it is still frozen,it may last 3 days. Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open 12 to 24 hrs this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.

Ge after replace fan still fan not working

Something to check for. Is the top of the refrigerator door lower than the freezer door? If so the ref. light may not be turning off all the time. Pull bottom panel off to expose hinges. The ref hinge should have an adjuster. Adjust door up to be level with freezer.
