These handycams are newer models packed with technology. While windows XP is an old windows and would not have its driver by default. If you have got a Disk with the Cam, insert that into the Drive and try to install driver from there. If you haven't, then you will first have to remove the defaulted driver and then download a new driver to run with it.
To uninstall the defaulted driver follow the steps:

  • Click on Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Double click on Device Manager
There you will see a yellow question mark for the driver of the cam coder. Right click on it and click in install. Then try connecting the Camera again and installing the driver. It if doesn't work, let the windows search in online for you. If it still doesn't work, try to find the driver for the camera on the Sony's site for your particular Cam.

Is there any way I can use the driver of my old camera, if it is only for Windows XP, and my laptop is on Windows 10?

go google and see if there is a driver for your camera compatible with win 10 if so just update the driver
the problem may be that the files were written in xp format and the win 10 may give you a message that what program was used for these files
There are ways to get the files to read but you will have to talk to an IT wizard to get how it is done

My Sony Handycam DCR-30 is not compatible with my windows 7, what can I do?

I'm assuming you have tried connecting it to your computer with the proper connector. It said something like no drivers for this. Then installing it (with CD or something) anyways and it said not compatible or something.

First, Windows 7 professional and Windows 7 Ultimate have a "Windows XP mode". So if you have one of those versions you could try this. Otherwise skip to the next part. It may work without it but if it doesn't, just use Windows XP mode. Which you can download here. The Microsoft Windows 7 compatability site also says the DCR-HC-30 is compatible.

Second, are you sure it is a "DCR-30?" I did a quick search on the Sony website, and the only thing I could find was a "DCR-HC30." There might be a "DCR-30" but you can try the DCR-HC30 drivers. Which does support Windows 7. It shouldn't mess up your computer installing this driver because it has to be the right hardware, otherwise it wouldn't be in use.

I hope this helps with your problem.
