The locking nut undoes in the same direction as the blade spins. It's done now!
Thanks

My Makita cordless angle grinder (new, used once) BGA452 wont go, it starts then the overload light comes on and it stops? changed battery, still happens.

Obviously too late for you, but it may help others.
I had the same problem with a new Makita 18v lithium grinder and this worked.

Remove battery, remove brushes. Using good quality cotton buds, dip in Methalated spirit and insert into hole for brush down to armature, slowly rotate head of machine. Change cotton bud and repeat process, then clean the brush heads. Re-assemble and try. Note: Meths will dry completely leaving no residue, unlike turps etc.

What is the resistor value on a Makita 9029s 230mm grinder, and what is the resistor for?

Resistor? Do you perhaps mean the capasitor that is connected to the supply leads?

If, so this works as an electric noise suppressor. Commonly, it comes in the form of a small yellow square plastic item, with two pins. It is an ac-type capacitor, and the value can be found stamped to on the side. The value is normally given in micro-Farads ( ?F ) or even nano-Farads. The performance of your Makita will not be hurt by a defect capacitor, but it will potentially cause disturbances to tv, radios and may even violate local regulations regarding electric noise. The capacitor can be found as regular spare part from your Makita dealer or any online tool store.

I have a brand new Grinder 230mm and now need to change the grinding disc however I cannot get the locking flange off - I have detroyed one spanner, and purchased a stronger one, but still no good. can...

Try turning it the opposite way. Instead of loosening it, you may be tightening it. Reverse threads on these machines are necessary to keep the flange from flying off by itself. Joe

How do you change the grinder disk. I have the tool with the two pronges that slide into the nut but the wheel keeps spinning. There must be a trick?

On the top of the grinder there should be a button. hold that in while turning the disk (please have the grinder unplugged while you do this).
The button wil drop further in when it finds the notch in the gear. This will lock the spindle, allowing you to remove the retaining nut.

Armature problems

Unplug tool and then remove the brush caps and brushes, at the front of the tool are 4 screws that need to be removed after removing them you might have to pry the gearcase from the motor housing and then it should just pull out if there is no problems with the field having been hot and melted. Let me know if you need further assistance

Something wrong with the armature

If the armature is shot, it will spark a lot where the brushes are touching the armature comutator. To remove the armature:1 Remove brushes. 2 Remove 4 screws holding the gear box. 3 Pull away gear box from the body. The armature may come with the gear box or not, it's only pushed in, so you should have no problem to disassemble it. If the armature stay in the grinder, use two skrew drivers to pray it out. You may not see anythink wrong with it, but it may be no good . That's Makita special, they don't make it good as they used to. The price for new grinder is about $130, for armature $65. field $40

Changing the disc

There are two methods in changing a disk.
somewhere on the machine you will see an arrow showing you
the direction the disk travels when being used, the nut that holds the disk
on always undoes opposite to this.

normal method

unplug grinder, use the 2 spanners supplied with the grinder.
one will look like a normal spanner but thinner, this goes on the nut over the disk.
the other spanner has 2 nodules which fit in the holes on the nut under disk.
whilst holding the disk stationary with the thin spanner, rotate the noduled spanner
in the oposite direction to the disk rotation when being used.
on some models of grinder, a button on top of the grinder must be
pressed in, this stops the rotation of the disk when replacing disk.
This button performs the same function as the flat spanner.

emergency method

If you cannot find or have lost special spanner(s)
pushing the palm of your hand firmly onto the disk surface and rotating
the disk with a sudden **** in the opposite direction to that when being used
may loosen the nut. if the nut is tight hold the disk firmly and use an old
screwdriver in one of the holes and tap nut loose with a hammer on screwdriver.
last resort........if possible break the disk using pliers and remove all pieces.

putting a new disk on is opposite to method that you used to remove one.
