How to clean the inside of a toaster

Slide the bottom door under the toaster and it will open, I would suggest doing it over a waste can or sink. You can take a small thin brush and get the crumbs out. Then your toaster will be back in working order. Crumbs that are stuck in the bottom of the tray is what causes it to burn the toast.

No removeable crumb tray located as shown & listed in manual

The tray may have been forgotten during assembly. Toaster oven crumb trays often simply slide in and out; there are no tracks. Put CEM on autodial and keep trying until a human being answers. Consider getting a crumb tray from some other brand and using it

Just purchased toaster oven model CE23551 and it did not have a crumb tray as advertised on the box and owner manual. Why is there no crumb tray ?

This model does NOT come with a crumb tray. In order to remove the crumbs from the bottom it must be shaken (like a toaster). I understand that this may be a little inconvenient; however, this machine is made relatively light weight for that purpose.

Constant use can lead to crumbs clogging the path of the lever. Try opening up the bottom panel, by pulling on the metal tab to release the plate (and crumbs!) over a trash can. Also try flipping the toaster upside down and, very gently, shaking the crumbs out. if that doesn't work, you can try checking the toaster's browning dial. This might be too low to activate the heating coil. Try dialing it up, and pushing the lever down again. I hope this helps. You can check our post on Best ways to use a Toaster oven. The fabric softner chamber seems to be clogged because after a wash it is full of water.

The fabric softener chamber is likely full of crud and or mildew.
  1. Pull out the detergent / softener tray (press down on the tab in the back to get it all the way out). Take it and wash it as well as you can.
  2. Now, pull the washer out enough that you can get to the back of the machine.
  3. Unplug the washer!
  4. Remove the four screws holding the plastic tabs (at the top) on the rear of the machine.
  5. You should now be able to remove the top cover of the machine - slide it back and then up.
  6. There are four small hoses connected to the back of the detergent tray, and one large hose.
  7. Take a marker / tape / etc. and label these hoses 1,2,3,4 - write the corresponding number on the top of the detergent tray so you will know where to hook them back up!
  8. Using pliers, squeeze the tabs on the small clamps to loosen them enough to pull them back about an inch on the small hoses.
  9. Pull the hoses off, gently.
  10. Use a phillips head screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the large black hose. Pull it off.
  11. You may want to loosen the other end of this large black hose and remove the hose for cleaning. Mine was nasty.
  12. There is a black bundle of wires snapped into the sides of the detergent tray. Take this bundle out of the clips so it hangs loose.
  13. Remove the two screws from the front of the detergent tray. These are on either side of the opening and are usually hidden by the detergent drawer.
  14. Now, you should be able to slide the entire fabric softener tray back and out of the machine.
  15. The tray comes apart into two pieces - gently pry the tabs on the sides to separate them.
  16. Clean everything! If anything is too nasty / clogged to clean, buy a replacement part.
  17. Reverse steps to reassemble and good luck!

6331 will not stay down

I have the 4-slice oster, but I bet the control mechanism is the same. When you take it apart you will see a small steel bar held by two plastic fingers. When you push the lever down the steel bar moves down and contacts a small square electromagnet. The electromagnet holds the lever down during toasting and releases the lever when done. On mine there was a compressed layer of bread crumbs covering the electromagnet. Cleaned it off and now it works again.

To take the toaster apart, pull the down lever straight out and then unfasten the screws on the bottom base (5 on mine) and pull the top off carefully. There are wires connecting the control face to the base, but they have enough slack to let you separate the top/bottom and access the mechanism.
