SOURCE: We have a Jandy Lite @ Model LG125N pool heater.

The reason it doesn't light is that the electrically operated gas valve is not coming on. It could be defective or the control circuit that tells it to come on is not doing that. If you have a meter and can connect the leads to the wires on the valve you should get 120VAC when the control circuit tells it to open. If you don't get this then the control circuit is not telling it to open. With the power off, check the resistance across the thermal safety device. It is located usually on the far left. It has two wires and they connect to a small axial leaded device. If it gets too hot it opens and prevents the heater from coming on. If the resistance value is very low, under 1 ohm, then it is OK. Other switches that could be open include the thermostat switch, the water flow switch, etc. Any one of these would prevent it from coming on. If you call the Jandy technical support number they might be able to help you diagnose the problem. I hope this helps.

Cycling on/off like that can be a number of things. One of the more common problems is a "flow" problem. Try cleaning out your filter. If it is this type of problem, the flow switch is not sensing proper amount of water flow.

Hello, I have a Amana Air Command 80 model #GHI90A50, 22 years old. This furnace is on its third ingnition module (last one two yeras ago). The symptom I am trying to diagnose has been ongioing since this...

If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning.

I have a problem where the heater ignites easily, stays lit for 30 seconds, then turns off, then kicks back up in 30 seconds. Burners look great? Not sure what could be wrong?

If you have a pilot their will be a flame sensor that's part of it. If this is a glow plug start it will be a probe that goes through the fire wall and is just above the burners. When you get flame the electrons align so that you will get a signal back at the ignition control that will let teg heater run. If it dosn't get a signal it shuts down so you don't get a build up of gas. Then it reset's and tries again. What your describing is a bad sensor or wire. Could be carbon build up on the sensor. If you can't find any problems with these you may have a bad ignition control box. First I would check the wire, connectors and probe itself.

The whole assembly must be replaced.

The sequence of operation is -

Combustion fan purges the heat exchanger. A pressure switch verifies combustion air fan is running. Usually a 30-45 second purge before the hot surface ignitor glows, or the spark ignition starts.

Gas valve opens after 10-15 seconds and main burners light. Control board monitors for flame and shuts gas valve after 2-3 seconds if main burner does not light.

If burner does not light, some boards repeat this for 3 tries, then locks out and is reset by cycling power.

Air blower comes on after another 30-45 seconds after main burner ignition.

Times may vary based on the specific controller board. A flow chart and timing sequence should be located somewhere on the unit, usually in the fan compartment.

Have a rheem criterion II. Model

The way it lights is that the gas is spread from one burner to the next by either a flame tray or small holes drilled in the burner tubes. If the flame does not get all the way across the burner tubes within a few seconds, the unit goes out on failure. Clean and inspect each burner tube, not just the orifice. Clean any tray that connects the burners. You can use a small wire brush or tooth brush but be careful near the glow igniter as it is very fragile.

Explosive Ignition

Check the alignment of the igniter to burner. It should be in the flame of the burner but to one side or just below. Does the igniter glow about 15 seconds prior to the gas valve opening or just a second or two. The igniter should glow 10-15 seconds prior. If the temperatures outside are unseasonably cold, you could be experiencing a gas regulator condition. If so, as the temperature rises, the condition would lessen. Call your gas company to get the regulator tested and gas pressure checked.
