Hey, I went by best buy and they suggested a rocketfish usb 2.5 hard drive enclosure kit. can i use another laptop for this or does it have to be a desktop? also do i need to remove the metal shell that covers the hard drive, it has four screws on the sides. or will that supposed to stay on?

  • hello4dolly Aug 06, 2008

it doesnt fit and i dont want to force it. not sure what to do. there is a metal part on the outside that held the screw that sticks out. is it safe to remove the outer shell.

    Hey,

it seems to be working but it is slow so im not sure if anything has actually copied b/c im to scared to stop the process. It has been running for over 24 hrs., still copying files. I hope it continues. I will let you know how it turns out. Is there any way to tell until it finnishes?

  • hello4dolly Aug 08, 2008

your awesome! Like i said before I had my life on that computer. we are still on the same file but it was documents and settings which is alot of info and sub folders. Luckily the laptop I am using for the transfer is new and has just been cleaned. she brought her comp. to someone to repare and they lost all of her info and just cleaned up the drive. I didnt want to take that chance. they just dont have the skills u do, Lol! how do I send all of the info to a flash drive? do you think that would be the best place to put it in order to transfer back to my computer?

  • hello4dolly Aug 10, 2008

Hey, i have tried to access the files and it says denied. what do I do now? I have also tried to copy them to a cd and that wont work. does that mean there is nothing there?

  • hello4dolly Aug 10, 2008

I tried rating but i am not sure they worked. should I try it again?

Hi again,

I understand. I posted a reply to your prior "Ask Me", did you get it, if not copy is below....

Were you able to get my other post? It is actually a continuation of our chat.

Would appreciate if you could update here as to the developments with your hard disk.

Cheers.

Appreciate your faith. To be able to find where a usb to ide adapt might be available to you, may I inquire your current location pls?

    Hello Dolly,

Thank you for the update. Yes the RocketFish would serve the purpose. It may be to your advantage to get a USB cable that looks like a Y, where one end has two USBs and the other end has only one. This is to ensure that your laptop's HD will be able to get all the power it would need.

It does not matter whether the 2nd computer is a laptop or a desktop. The only requirement is that it has USB ports.

There is no need to remove the metal shell as long as the connectors would fit in snugly and correctly.

Good luck. Pls let me know how things turned up..

Yes, it would only be a think shell held by 4 small screws. Often the inside would be covered with clear plastic.

    Hi,

The slow performance could be attributed to the possibility that the laptop's hard disk already have errors and that the 2nd PC is having a hard time trying to fix the errors or reading the files even if with errors.

The length of time to read/recover/copy is dependent on:

    • size of hard drive to be recovered;

    • condition of the hard drive;

    • speed/memory/capacity of the 2nd PC.
To give you an idea, recovery on an old 80Gb HD took more than 48 hours in one of my similar work.

Normally, there would be a message that the copy/recovery has completed.
Your patience would be rewarded when you show your friends that it did work (the recovery) even if it was already messed up.

    and hello again,

The flash drive would work but if I read your post right, 4 Gb or even perhaps an 8Gb might be better. Still, the best may be to burn them into a DVD (or several) and thereafter you would have a permanent backup. Should something similar happen (hope not), you need to copy/revocer only the new files since your DVD backup would still be with you presumably.

    Am happy for you.

    Hi,

If I may, I have a favor to ask. Could you perhaps spare time to rate all my responses related to your problem. My being able to provide support is largely based on my ranking and rating on the site. These are provided by users like you who were able to resolve their concern with my assistance. Would appreciate if you could do so.
    They are:

    Again, thanks in advance.

A possible reasons "Access Denied" in viewing the recovered/copied files is they were secured password in your original laptop. A workaround is to create a new folder in the c: of the 2nd laptop and copy the contents/files of the copied/recovered "My Documents" not the folder.

Thanks for attending to the rating request. I send an email to FixYa requesting them to communicate to you instructions as to how to go about the rating.

    Cheers.

It only last for 1 hour and a half . according to the store this is normal because my processor is AMD athlon and 2 gig memory. i thought 6 cell batteries run for abt 3 hours. is there a compatible battery...

The lithium iron battery for this conputer is 4000 mA/hrs. or 4 Ampere hours. That means that with a draw of 1 Ampere the computer would be useable off the battery for 4 hours. Since you can't run off the battery below a certain voltage you can deduct 20% leaving a battery life of a little over three hours.

My ascer aspire 3680 has windows xp on it. I had

go to advanced option by tapping f8 while starting the computer, go to disabled automatic restart, now this time onwards if it crash again it will tell u the err , then u can talk abt the resolution. by the time u can do a system restore.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2.
On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
3.
On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, as shown in Figure 2, and then click Next.

Figure 2
4.
On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.
5.
Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.
6.
The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.

After reviewing the stability of your system, you can choose another restore point or undo this restoration. Just open System Restore and make the appropriate choice. After you use System Restore, you'll have an additional task, Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page. Remember that you'll have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point.
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.
