Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Laptop is completely dead, charger ok, battery ok and new internal lead from jack to m/board. We have two of these laptops and all the above work fine when hitched up in the other machine, apart from the motherboard failing any other ideas on what to check. I have some but limited knowledge of the internals!

The laptop in question is an IBM Lenovo 3000 n200 type0769-BWG

Hi, as stated in original text, yes.

  • roytsn Apr 04, 2011

I know it must be difficult when you can't see it for yourself! The ram is seated correctly, the problem is there seems to be no power at all not with batery only (I fully charged this on our other identicl machine on which it works fine) , with the charger only (also tested on other machine ) or both. Tere are no power lights on of any desciption. I have also changed the internal connection lead from power jack to mother board for the one out of the eother machine. As previously mentioned, I'm not that well up with internals, I suppose I'm trying to find out if this problem has occured enough times for some history to be available. I have noticed over the past three weeks the several of the same model for sale reporting the same problem on ebay.

Any ideas for how to find out if the m/boards shot would be greately appreciated.

*********** board is X3100 rite .. now check the RAM is it inserted properly , then check for the processor .. unplug it from frame and then insert again check if its not burned .. the chip on its upper level will be shinning and new if it isn't , if it is dark and burn-y type then your processor is out , there is always a power bulb in mother board,,, if it is on when you turn the laptop on then your main board is OK . and if its not then out of work .. sorry for that i am a professional at boards but sometime if you don't see a thing for your self ,things don't work,,,, it is this way ,no matter how much i try if you don't explain the things right to me i wont be able to figure it out .

more over have you tried to plug it by VGA cable to a monitor or LCD... check and confirm

about your issue first of all i wonder that Was the adapter you bought directly from Lenovo? I just know that dell builds in a chip to detect the adapter, some other adapter might work but it will burn down the board after quite some time(slowly and gradually) . may be your another lap top didnt spend much time on that adapter , its a MAYBE??

secondly have you tried troubleshooting following steps , that may help resolve minor issues, like

    1. No LCD display but unit is actually powered ON
    2. Laptop battery not charging
    3. Keyboard not responding
    4. windows no boot issue

here is answer to these all : take out the battery and unplugged the power adapter. press and hold the power button for 30 secs then release after 30secs. put the battery/adapter back in. issue above should be resolved. if fails, contact your computer's manufacturer thats the least i want to say , which is the first post i am not willing to say so for you i wish i could have helped.???

my third openion to you is I would say your laptop lcd and other parts are fine it is a mother board you require. If you browse ebay there are lots to choose from at different prices. It is a straightforward job to replace .:)

my fourth suggestion is take a deep look at circuit board , may be you can find a broken peice or wire thats visible in the board.or any IC's here we use meterial called (tail)i dont know whats it called in english ( its like wax) but we pour some on the chips or memory units and heat them so if its dead its life becomes a month young so in that time we can sell it to some one and recover price .. so if you are willing to take a risk ,carry on ..
but do post here if your problem is solved in any manner Fixya will love to know it through you .

take care and ii hope your problems GET SOLVED!

Plugged in, not charging

First, try another charger. Perhaps your charger isn't providing enough volts to the laptop

Sony vaio not charging while charger plugged in

Seemingly your laptop dc jack is dead. How to confirm it? If you should wiggle your laptop charger on a position to let your laptop charge, it indicates your dc jack is loose. Either replace it or repair it. If your dc jack works well, please check your ac adapter. Maybe your charger is dead.

Laptop wont boot after installing new battery

The problem is most likely the DC jack in the laptop, a common issue! but to find out the computer must be dismantled down to the motherboard level and the DC jack resoled, might be enough to get it up and running.

Sony laptop dead problem

Could be many things. Let start with a couple of easy ones.1) Unplug charger from computer and outlet, take battery out press power for at least 30 sec. Plug every thing back power on. 2) charger bad won't turn on or charge battery, try diferent charger if don' know how to use a voltmeter. 3) power jack loose or broken. 4) last and worst mother board circuits transitors etc... btw processor, video card or input devices fried. Buy new board from ebay. Don,t fix it. Not worth it. This is Only if laptop gives completely sign of not turning at all. No lights, no hardrive or no working or fan. No signal of life. If couple of lights do turn on it can be the ram or video card, play with ram a bit. Good luck.

I Have A Compaq Computer But Got Some Reason It Cannot Be Charged.

Ok, your problem is not very well explained, I dont know if you are techy or nooby, also do not mention how old is the equipment. options:
1- Defective battery pack, HP has recalled a few battery pack models for them being defective, check with HP's website to see if yours has been recalled.
2- Defective or not working charger, HP and compaq chargers do not have indicator light unfortunately, so the only way to make sure is by testing the lead with a multimeter.
3- Broken cables within insulation, either power outlet to charger, or charger lead itself broken internally from being stepped on or run over by furniture. test them both.
4- Worse case scenario, if your charging light goes off and on every few minutes, then your power board may be going out or defective, battery not taking charge (dead), possible issue with mother board going bad.
Hope this helps a bit...

No power at all

A couple of things to check and a couple of questions to help me (or somebody else help you further)

No power. Is this using both battery and mains to power?
Is there an LED light on the ac adaptor and if so is it steady or flashing?

If there is a flashing LED light, it means that the power is not completing the circuit to the laptop
(internal fault with laptop, may be a blown mainboard fuse)

If the charger light is steady, then power is getting to the laptop. Check the security of the DC jack port where it enters the laptop, of wobbly or loose, this will need replacing. Some are soldered onto the board, others are held in place by a clip and connect to the board via a wire, worth checking the wire to motherboard connections as these can fail.

If the jack port is firm and you are getting power to the laptop from the charger, test, with a multimeter set to DV volts (19 volts) by touching the red terminal to the inner of the adaptor jack and the black terminal to the outer of the jack. Low voltage readings indicate the charger is not outputting the right voltage

Remove battery and test using mains alone
Remove mains and test using battery alone

If the battery was known to be charged and will not power up the laptop, the fault is more serious than just a blown fuse. If the steps above fail to solve the problem, you will need to take the laptop to a repair shop for testing of the motherboard.

If this advice did not help PLEASE do not leave any feedback "thumbs".

Left computer running with charger connected. Screen went blank and light showing power connected was no longer lit. New charger did not solve it. New battery (with some charge) worked. Still no charge so...

If your charger is working properly and the laptop is as well, then the laptop should work without a battery in it at all. If your new battery worked and laptop worked with it until the battery died, then the charger or charge port is damaged.

If it does not work with charger plugged in without a battery, then your charger(s) or the laptop charge port itself may be damage or broken. Or worse, the laptop may be dead.

If the laptop does nothing even with a good battery with charge (no fans, no boot, nothing on-screen, no noises) you're laptop could be dead; likely a burned motherboard or processor. It may have overheated or something along those lines.

The laptop doesn't boot. Its dead. I tried connecting the charger, but it doesn't shows any signs of charging. It doesn't even show the laptop is charging.i.e no led is lit when charger is connected.Please...

If it is completely dead check the voltage at power adapter DC contacts using a multimeter.

If there is voltage within 0.5 Volts from specifications, then try starting the laptop with no internal battery. A shorted battery may cause the laptop not starting.

If battery and adapter are OK, then the problem is the DC socket in the laptop motherboard. The laptop must be taken apart and the solder joints soldered back. This is a delicate job and must be done by an experienced repairer.

In some case the whole power circuit or the main board may be faulty. Testing is done reading Ohms at DC socket solder joints on main board (or power board, depending on model).

I have a compac lap top and when i plug in the wall charger nothing happens it wont charge

check to see if you can hear a hum from the charger it self , push the box hard againts ear if its humbing charger is ok, if you cant hear anything from it check fuse to plug. if this is ok then charger is broken.

If charger is ok check the conection into the laptop if it feels loose and when u move it slightly it goes on and off then possible conection to laptop prob.

If this conection is ok and the charger is humbing and working, could be a possible internal switch gone in the laptop that decides to charge and not charge when battery is full. These are always failling on laptops but hopfully its not this.

If you find the charger is broken search ebay for a new or secound hand one, aint to expensive. hope this helps

Acer 5100 laptop doesn't work on ac or charger battery

Motherboard is bad and will have to be replaced unless of course the AC Jack on the back of the laptop is loose. That would cause the ac adapter not to charge and then you would have to take the motherboard out and put solder on each leg on the bottom of the ac jack to make sure it stays in place then the ac adapter can charge the battery properly.

Even going thru the solder method the motherboard could still be bad and have nothing to do with the ac jack.
