The file directory is accessable but some of the files in that directory have the above error when copied or moved to another media

Hi

If cannot copy but you can open the file. I suggest you open it first and Save again to any destination folder you want. That will help solve your problem.

Another is try to copy one by one and not by bulky copying.

Make sure it is not write protected and surely you cannot copy any file at all. Maybe you have the auto lock write protect. To remove, press right click mouse and the option says unwrite protect.

If not try to install the WD software again to your computer. It might help you as well.

I hope it helps you this solutions. Regards

Hi.

To be able to assist you better, may I know the exact error that you are getting?

Is the file directory not accessible itself or just specific files?

Thank you!

When something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination you will normally see this kind of error. he most common times you will see the cyclic redundancy check error
message is when trying to read data from a damaged CD or DVD or hard
    drive.

Here are few things you can do:

    1. Try using a different USB cable. More often than not, CRC errors are usually caused by faulty USB cables.

    2. Scan your external HDD for error (right click the HDD -> Properties ->Tools - error checking). After finish try to copy again

    3. Run a diagnostic test. You can download it from here.

    4. Open Command Prompt and type CHKDSK. If you come out with errors, post the result here.

    5. If the files are important, you may want to connect directly the hard drive to the pc as a secondary hard drive

    • Remove the HDD from the enclosure and look at where you connect the IDE
ribbon cable and the power cord in there in between them should be four
      sets of two pins.

I hope this helps. Let me know what happens.

    Thank you!

WD External Hard Drive Passport Ultra Beginner's Questions

Usually with an external hard drive it's not necessary for it to copy over an existing backup or at least you can program your PC not to do this. What will happen is you will have several different copies of backup's and you will have to decide if you want to erase the others and keep the most resent one. Yes your file will be saved withing the backup but if you change the file name it will file this as a new file

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

Hi , I just copied my hard drives to my new Passport Essentials SE using the WD Smartware software, I do not like I have to manually switch between my two internal hard drives to back up so I would like to...

As far as I remember WD just copies the software into the PassPort drives and you don't have to install anything you can just run the software from the drive. If that is still the case then first take a backup of that software (basically copy that software folder to some place in your internal drives) then format the drive (make sure you select NTFS as the file system for the drive when formatting).
Formatting will erase all the files in the drive so make sure you have backup of you personal files also.
Formatting also resets the drive back to factory setting (if you want the WD software back then just copy it from the backup to the PassPort drive).

Hi and welcome khaksh ,
Connect your passport to your lap .
Let your antivirus full scan the content of it .
Complete the scan with MalwareBytes , a powerfull malware killer :
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
To completely finish the job , have the content of your lap fully scanned by both applications .
When you are shure both pc and passport are virus free , try accessing locked files as administrator .
I hope this will help you .
Best regards ,

I'm not able to write files to my WD passport drive. It works fine in XP, but I have a Mac only..really not sure wat to do here..sos!

If the WD has been formatted in NTFS then the MAC cannot read or copy to this hard disk.
To make it compatible for the PC and MAC, format the WD Passport drive on your XP computer in FAT32 format. Then you can copy and exchange files between the PC and MAC.

I have a wd used on a mac and would like to use it on a eepc as well, but it is not working...I can't open it on the eepc

The disk-drive might be formatted for usage _only_ with Mac OS X.
Copy all the files from it to your Mac's disk-drive.
Move the Passport to any PC, and "format" the disk for use by Windows.
Move the Passport to your Mac, and copy all the "saved" files back onto the Passport.
Move the Passport to your EEPC, and you should be able to use it, and to see the filenames that you copied from your Mac.

How do I restore my files on my passport to my internal hard drive

Why not make it KISS (Keep it simple and stupid). Go to your my Passport folders or files that you want to copy, Click on it and Copy (ctrl c) or Cut it (ctrl x), now go to your internal drive (C:\ or D:\,etc) and do Paste (ctrl V. You can also copy or cut multiple files or folders.

Cannot copy large files onto my WD passport

Your drive is probably in FAT32 format.  FAT32 has a 4GB file limit that is why your 5GB movie isn't saving.  You will have to format the drive in Mac OS file format (HFS) using Disk Utility.
Unfortunately once its in Mac format the drive will not be recognized by windows PCs.  What I do is have a program called macdrive installed on my windows computers so that they can access mac format hard drives.
i hope this helps!

WD Passport Drive Lights Up But Compu Does Not Find the Drive

No NO , WD is an excellent company as of 2004 , excellent products from them , if you wanna complain rag on seagate SATA drives hahaha they decided to dissable S.M.A.R.T. technology on their drives , yuck !

if the drive stopped working like that all the sudden , USE YOUR WARRENTY and RMA the drive back to the compay , get them to give you an RMA number , make up any sad story as long as the drive is still under warrenty , now they may ask you to pay for the new drive they send , but thats just untill they verify your old one is dead , then they'll refund the money back to your bank account.
which is totaly reasonable and protects them financialy , anybody would do the same.

You'te not alone , many many many DIFFERENT external drives are working one day and not working the next , it has alot to do with the batch , a particular batch of drives may be defective and nobody knows about it till it happens.... so please don't be real upset at maxtor or any others , but you can deffinately rag on seagate hahaha if just for their taking away the SMART drive diagnostics from their SATA drives .. we'll get you seagate Muhahaha we want our diagnostic tools because we're hardware monkies lol

so my advice is don't fight this too much , and RMA the drive back to the company if you still have warrenty power ...

they do have data recovery service , that may cost you more money , but you must decide what the data is worth to you , and maybe they will even get your data back for you if the drive was/is still under warrenty ,

always use your warrenty powers when you can.
