Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

My son is using an EPSON STYLUS DX4400, which seems to be fine when when prinitng scanned images or downloads from the internt. However, when attempting to print photos downloaded from his telephone, they are either washed out or have green lines all across the width of them.

    Thanks, Jack.

I haven't seen my son yet, but I do know that the pictures are being saved in jpeg format and that he is using the Windows XP picture viewer to print the pictures.

I know about picture formats! But what is the ‘compression ratio’?

Phones often use strange compression formats. Download the pictures to your computer then use them on the printer via a picture viewing application. Should resolve the issue.

JPG images are supposed to have resolution tags attached to them. Some cameras do not attach this information properly. Usually it doesn't matter, Microsoft picture viewer doesn't care for example, since it reads the image to determine the settings with which to display the picture on your screen...but your printer might. This would also explain why downloaded "jpg" files print fine. You would probably notice similar problems if you used something like Quark to view the photos, which is more sensitive to these tags being there.

If this is the issue it is possible that you can fix it by updating the driver for your printer from Epson's site; as this has to be a common enough problem that they may have patched it.

But in the immediate, it should also fix the issue if you open the jpg first in any picture editor and resave it from within the application in a slightly different format or compression ratio.

You need some sort of photo editing program such as MS Paint or Paint Shop or any other imaging software. Open the program and click on Import. It will ask you which device or which TWAIN device you'd like to import from. Click on your scanner and you should be able to start scanning.

How to scan on an Epson Stylus DX4400

To scan an image into your PC you need to use a piece of software called the Epson Scan Utility. This
comes on the installation CD with the printer but if you don't have the CD it can be downloaded from
Epson Support. For Europe:
Or US:
Once it is installed it will put an icon on the desktop, or (if you have Windows) a folder in the Start
menu. Turn the printer on and start the Epson Scan utility (it doesn't work if the printer is off), it
can be used in 3 modes: Fully Auto, Home Use or proffessional. Fully auto is the simplest, just click
on the scan button. For the others be brave and experiment!
Please take a moment to rate this solution, thanks.
