Question about Dishwashers

Open Question

My mother-in-law has an old Service Secret compact dishwasher. Last time we tried to use it, it started a cycle and when we returned to it the red light was on to say the cycle was finished but the dishes were still as they were when they went in. She's checked there's salt (hard water area) and yes there was a dishwasher tablet in!

SOURCE: DISHES COVERED IN WHITE POWDER

To check on the source of the white powder (calcium?) soak some dishes in vinegar to see if this cleans them up nicely ... or if the 'white powder' is actually permanent etching. You may have very 'hard' water and will need to deal with that with a water softener or additives.

Read the following article for a better understanding and try the vinegar test . (also ensure you are using dishwasher specific salt to regenerate your integral softener... assuming you have one)

SOURCE: Dish Washer

the problem is not the dishwasher but the water that actually is going into it. the white, powder substance is because of hard water. there is a affordable product out there called the dishwasher filtration system. it will filter the water going into your dishwasher and solve the problem once and for all!!! it is affordable and easy to install. www.dishwasherfilter.com

SOURCE: Glasses not clean and shiny

Dishwashers have a part usually called a separator or accumulator which traps the dirt from the water during the wash cycles while the water is continuously recycled to clean the dishes. At the end of the cycle the separator is flushed out and the trapped dirt goes down the drain. If it doesn't get flushed out the dirt builds up till it starts showing up on the dishes. Some separators have a hole on top and one on bottom with a valve which stops up one hole or the other depending which cycle it's running. The valve can be stuck or broken causing the problem.

I have an older dishwasher also and recently my wife also complained about it not cleaning right... so me being the man I am tried in vain to clean the things... Bought new spray arms online and installed them in minutes...now the thing works like new... However I have also found that if the heating element goes bad then that also can mess things up bad... So I would buy new spray arms, and also check out the heating element to make sure it is working... Here is a tip that will help you with the online buying...

My haier dishwasher won't drain. It's new ( used 3 times ). It has never drained properly according to mother in law. Didn't drain last night ( no dish cycle ) , pipes and filters all clear of debris.

Two things that you can try. One is to get a wet and dry vacuum and hook it to the drain hose and see if you can vacuum any water out. You should be able to. The other thing is to see if you can force water in with a garden hose. If memory serves me the pump has a valve on it and the valve might not be opening. It could be the valve or the power to the valve.

GE Nautilus won't drain after Rinse Cycle

Check disposer plug. If a garbage disposer has been recently installed, it is possible the disposer drain plug was not removed. The drain plug is a plastic piece in the disposer that blocks the hole where the dishwasher hose connects. Also check the hose connected to the disposal. Mine apparently had a kink in it. When I straightened the hose the dishwasher drained at full speed (I recently had a plumber re-route a hot waterline. He must has bent the hose). Hope this helps. If not go to the GE website. That's where I found my answer.
