Question about Behringer Pmp3000 16 Channel Audio Mixer

1 Answer

I have a Behringer PMP 6000 that I just bought. With the power amp switch in Main L/Main R it works fine, but if I switch it to Main/Mon, only the Mon works, nothing from the Main. Bridge mode doesn't work at all. Any idea what might be going on?

When I use Mon 1, the monitor controls work fine.
The sliders in the the main section have no effect at all, I have the channels up and the master up, but no sound comes out of the main side.
When I put the switch back to Main L/ Main R, the sliders work fine.
In other words, when the switch is in mon 1/mono, the monitors work fine and no sound comes out of the main.

Found the problem, boy do I feel like an idiot!
When in mon1/mono mode, the main 1 slider has no effect, you have to use the mono slider
as the master volume, so the mono slider has to be up.
I also noted the tip about speakon to 1/4" plugs.
    Thanks for your help!

Bridge mode you use chan B (left connector on the back) using a SPECIALLY wired Speakon. The impedance of a speaker connected as such CANNOT be LESS than 8 ohms.

In the Main/Mon mode, the two amplifiers are separated in function. The monitor knobs for EACH channel input control the mix sent to Channel A which is for the monitor speakers. The Mon1 controls the level sent to Output A for the monitor speakers. Mon2 fader is NOT used.

The individual channel faders control the main mix and the Main fader controls the level sent to Output B which goes to the main speakers.

This is a little weird... I have been studying the schematics for this unit, actually the PMP5000 which is really identical... It appears that BOTH the MONO and the MAIN faders control the output "B". Things to check: Standby switch is in UP position. BOTH MONO and the MAIN sliders are up. If this doesn''t work get back to me and I will go over the schematics again... it isn't easy as they are on MANY pages and the signals jump everywhere. I have never used my units in this mode or bridged mode. Please note the tip I wrote on here regarding a hazard of channel A output when using 1/4 inch speaker cables (speaker end). The sleeve of channel A is the HOT, not the tip and grounding may blow that output. Of course in bridged mode both outputs are hot. Recommend using ONLY Speakon to Speakon cables in bridged mode.

Glad you got it working... DO be careful to have SECURE speaker cables as it is easy to pop the amp if cables are shorted or come loose during use. I always loop the cables at the speakers through the handles to help prevent them from getting yanked when people trip over them.

Try plugging in a set of headphones into each of the mon left and right. If the monitor sliders are up AND the channel monitor knobs are up you should be able to hear in ONE SIDE only of the headphones. If not, then you may have failed to power your monitor amp or speakers from the SAME receptacle as the mixer and this can result in ground bouncein building wiring that will blow out the driver chips for the mon signals.

We set up the monitors in our pmp 6000 at the mon send jacks but we didn't get any sound from it when we turned up the monitor volumes. What is the proper way to set them up?

I HOPE you know that the monitor send jacks are NOT powered. You MUST use either powered monitors or an external amp for these to drive speakers. Assuming you have done that, you have to turn up one or both of the monitor knobs for each channel you wish to send to the monitors at the desired level. Then you advance the monitor faders for the overall monitor level.

How can a PMP 2000 be patched so that both internal amps are used to power the monitors, and the mains are sent from the mainpre-out to another power amp, while using one internal eq for the mains, and the...

No you can't quite do this since the EQ's are right before the power amps in the signal flow. The monitor output would drive two 8 ohm speakers daisy chained at roughly 300 watts RMS... I can't imagine needing more than that for a venue that is within the capabilities of this unit.
You can drive both power amps by the monitor output by setting the mon/main function on the switch and using a short TRS cable jumper between MONITOR PREAMP OUT and the RIGHT POWER AMP INPUT jack. Drive your mains from the LEFT PREAMP OUT. The EQ's will ONLY affect the monitors. Use an external EQ if you need to EQ the mains with this connnection. Use TRS balanced cables to the main amp and CONNECT all interconnected equipment to the SAME power source or receptacle, even if it means running an extension to the mixer.

The MON faders ONLY control the output to the MON L and MON R jacks, NOT the split use of MAIN/MON outputs. You MIGHT try varying the MONO fader and see if it varies the MON part of the split output.
Best to use the unit as MAIN L and R to main speakers and use a stereo amp or POWERED monitors driven from the MON L and R jacks. With this, the MON faders will control your monitors as you would like them to.
ALSO make sure ALL equipment connected together is powered from teh same recepacle power system. Powering interconnected equipment from receptacles at opposite ends of the room is asking for damage due to ground bounce and faults.
PLEASE read my tip on here about a HAZARD of speaker polarity if you use Speakon to 1/4 inch cables.

Can i hook up a seperate power amp . to the pmp 6000 powerd mixer . for more over all power.

You can add extra amps driving ADDITIONAL speakers... you CANNOT parallel amps driving the same speakers.

Drive these seperate amps from the MAINS OUT connnectors using TRS and balanced lines to those external amps.

Please read a tip I just posted regarding a hazard of the Speakon to 1/4 inch cables when used with these PMP mixers.

If you are using your main speakers as stereo, then you will need either powered monitor speakers OR an additional seperate amp for them. The mon outputs on the mixer are LINE LEVEL and are not driven by a power amp. Use TRS (balanced) interconnect cables from these to POWERED monitor speakers.

You can parallel your two mains providing the parallel impedance is 4 ohms or greater (two 8 ohms in parallel at most). The the monitor speakers can be paralleled and the switch set to Main/Mon so that one side of the power amp drives the mains and the other drives the monitors.

To prevent damage to the mixer, make sure all speaker leads are secure before powering the system. Run the speaker leads through the handles of the speakers to prevent inadvertent unplugging due to personell tripping over cables.

DO NOT use the bridge mode in your use.

Behringer PMP5000. The Powered Output B dead

Make sure the three position slide switch is set correctly for the stereo usage, that is NOT the bridged OR the Mon mode.

MAKE SURE the pan pots are set to middle as they control the spit of the audio to the two channels.

This is a class "D" amplifier (switching) and there really isn't any fuse for a single channel.

MAKE SURE your speakon connections are good by swapping your speaker cables.

I repaired my unit and had to do that without schematics... Behringer will not give them out. Mine had a severe arc-over on one side power amp taking out about ten transistors and diodes and one swithcing regulator chip. Had to cut out the "cancer" of the burned board.

This unit uses a complementary output stage that is made up of one transistor on one side and a pair in parallel on the other. This drives the inductor/capacitor filter... I think the switching frequency is between 100KHz and 1 MHz as I recall. All those transistors were gonzo. It also fried the main power switching transistors in the power supply, several smaller transistors, diodes, and the switching regulator chip.
Also two 10 ohm power resistors were fried. They soft start this unit by charging the main caps via two resistors that limit the inrush current.
A small switching supply has to come up first before the main supply which sends the DC to the amp section.

With the AB switch at the center position Mon1/Main you control the volumes INDIVIDUALLY with the MON pot for each input that is a couple positions above each of the input sliders.
