A boot device is the drive that the machine tries to find Windows on. Usually it is the Hard disk. But there are time to boot from a floppy. It appears that either the hard drive is bad or the bios needs to be reset. Bios is the settings that tell the computer what the system is made of(hardware wise) it also is where you set the time, so when you power down the machine it still remembers the correct time.
Depending on what make of computer you have there are different way to get into the bios.
How to get into the bios: restart the computer and before the windows screen comes up, type F1 or sometime enter key. This veries by manufactor. Once you select the correct keys you should see a tab that saids startup and in there there is an option to boot from the cdrom first, Hard drive next etc...
Let me know if you need more help.
P.S. Please don' t forget to rate me.
Thanks

Boot device means anything you can boot from (eg hard drive, CD, flash stick, etc). If your getting that message its most likely because it isn't recognizing the hard drive. You can try to take the back off and make sure the hard drive didn't get knocked loose, but depending on how big of a drop it suffered, it might have broke the glass platters.

Misty here is what I would do:
1.Start the computer in safe mode.
2. update drivers. I go into Slim Driver - a free prog. and scan the system to see if ok or need updates.
3. once updated, reboot the system normally - any change? GL

Help with reboot message for Asus G1 notebook.

Sounds like its trying to boot from the Optical drive (cd/dvd drive) thats empty or has no disc in it. You will need to get into the BIOS and change the boot sequence. Select HDDR 1st to boot from your C: drive where your OS is.

What do I do when I get a reboot and select proper boot device and there is no devices connected?

Hmmm - select a proper boot device - but you probably already tried that.
Anyway, its possible your system has a little corrosion on one of the contacts connecting your
hard drive (a proper boot device) to the PCMCIA or PCI bus on your notebook PC. If so, you
may want to reseat the hard drive, which is to say remove it, and then plug it right back in - just to
try and make the proper connections between the hard drive and its bus.
Also, if you have a bootable CD, then insert it, and boot away.
I assume that this notebook PC was an Xmas gift and you're still getting familiarized, but if not,
happy Xmas anyway.

Reboot and select proper boot device

Hi, ull need to check the boot device priority in ur BIOS which is accessable usualy by pressing the delete key at the start of the boot process. If everthing is correct there and yet it doesnt boot from ur hard disk, try changing it to boot from cd and check if it boots. If it does then i think either your hard disk is corrupted or your OS.

When I turn on my MSI M510C notebook - ''reboot and select proper

Your notebook does not see the proper boot files on your C drive. Many times the boot.ini has been corrupted.
You will need a Windows XP Install CD mounted in the CD Rom. When you boot the system you need to choose the CD as the boot device (if the notebbok does not do it by default) then typr R to enter the recovery console. Once you get the C: prompt you will need to create a new boot.ini file using the bootcfg command. See the following website for details in using the Recovery Console:

When you reboot, go to BIOS, restore factory BIOS settings. If that doesn't help, you'll need to reinstall your OS.

I've read this problem due to new hardware interferences with desktop computers, all they had to do is change a few pins around on the harddrives.. since this is a laptop, and is quite difficult and dodgy to access the hardware, the only other suggestion is to reinstall windows with a recovery disk, or windows CD-ROM.

Hope this helps :)
