Question about Toshiba 1415-S105, 1415-S106, 1415-S115, 1415-S173, 141... (610074362609)
First thing to check is if your model has a built in BIOS diagnostic. Right after turning the computer on look for a menu. It may have one listed directly for diagnostic, or you may have to find it under something like boot menu or options. Sometimes its also in the BIOS. The key to get into the BIOS for your model is F12 according to the manual I found for it.
If you have a diagnostic, it should be able to find the cause of your problems if they are hardware related.
If not, you can narrow down the options of what could be wrong. Build a Ubuntu live disc (instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download ).
Put it in your computer and select the boot menu and pick your CD drive.
Once it loads to the menu, select memtest86+. This will test your RAM to make sure it is working properly.
If that checks out ok, you can check your processor by following the instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
If it isn't the memory or the CPU, it most likely is the hard drive or motherboard. Unfortunately there aren't many good tests for mother boards. If you want to test the hard drive, you can carefully remove it from the back of the laptop and find the manufacturer. Most of the major manufacturers have a diagnostic tool to see if it is the hard drive. If it runs for a bit you can also try pressing F8 when booting and select command prompt and run "chkdsk /r". This will look for bad sectors on the disc and try to recover any data on them (also let you know if its starting to go bad).
If it is the hard drive, you may still be able to copy data off by either using the chkdsk command (might buy you enough time to boot windows and grab your stuff) or using the ubuntu live disc.
Please leave feedback if this was helpful. Thanks.
