You have to contact Sony technical support for assistance like your PSP says.

If the update hung in the middle, the software on your PSP GO is probably no good anymore. Sony will have to repair it. While there are ways to rebuild the system software on the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 systems, there is no way to do it on the PSP GO (or the PSP-3000).

How 2 upgrade

It depends what firmware you are trying to upgrade to. If you want to install custom firmware on your PSP, check this YouTube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/ubeenstryked
If you want to install official firmware, you can find a list of downloads here: http://downloads.exophase.com/category/psp-official-firmware/
When you select the firmware you want to install, download it. You will get a .zip file with a file inside called EBOOT.PBP. Follow these steps to update:
1.) Connect your PSP to your PC. 2.) Open the PSP folder and then the GAME folder. 3.) Right click INSIDE the GAME folder, and click New Folder 4.) Name the new folder UPDATE 5.) Place the EBOOT.PBP file you downloaded into the UPDATE folder. 6.) Disconnect your PSP from your computer, and select the MEMORY STICK ICON in the GAME section. 7.) Find the PSP Update Version.. and run it, complete the on screen steps to install the new firmware.

PSP console not working

you failed to state if your son was doing the update via UMD disc. im inferring so, so if the battery died while it was updating, your sons PSP is bricked. you need a Pandora battery + magic memory stick. you can find them on ebay, amazon, anywhere. also if you ask around where you live some people may do it locally.

Psp connection...

I dont have ps3, but are you trying to connect thru wifi? if you have a usb cable, i always found it best to download the update off the psp website and transfer it to your psp, then run the update off it. that would be my suggestion, i think you can also connect your psp to your ps3 (lucky bugger) thru usb aswell, so thats what i suggest you do.
