Question about Intermatic Malibu 300W Power Pack Transformer ML300RTW

1 Answer

I have a ML300RTW Malibu transformer (S/N ML300RTW) that I bought 7/31/08. I'm pulling 170 watts from that transformer. I purchased new trippers from Northern Lights Electrical Supply. I have replaced the bulbs. The lights go off OK but will not turn on at all. I can turn them on manually OK. The transformer does not hum like it used to before it tripped. What is my problem with them not tripping on?

You can buy cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override and then plug power pack into cheap timer.
Otherwise there are no repair parts for power packs other than on-off trippers.
Power packs come with 5 year limited warranty, so you are within warranty period. Good job saving the date of purchase, you outshine with that detail.

I have the ML300RTW transformer. Just need to know about the trippers, one red and one black. Which one turns the system on and which one turns it off.

Here's how to check your power pack: Connect everything and set trippers randomly, and then manually rotate dial clockwise and watch when lights turn on-off, this will let you check if you have trippers set correctly.
As time passes, the dial rotates, and trippers push on-off lever that turns low-voltage lamps on-off.

If trippers no longer work, it's because trippers are worn down or the lever is worn out or the electrical contacts have burned. And the clock motors slow down and burn out.
There are no repair parts for low-voltage transformers. No trippers or timers.
"Harry" wrote to fixya with idea when timer no longer works: he bought cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override, and then plugged power pack into cheap timer.

Since there are no repairs for low voltage transformers, I found tips that might save money:
The reason I add tips now, before power pack needs replacement is some fella wrote fixya.
He bought 500 Watt power pack to replace 300 Watt > thinking bigger was better.
Power pack burned out. Here's why:
a) Match wattage of bulbs with wattage of power pack
Lets say you have fifteen 20 watt bulbs = 300 watts, so install 300Watt power pack
b) Installing a 500W power pack on 300W of bulbs will burn out bulbs and power pack.
c) Replace bulbs as soon as they burn out or other bulbs will burn out and power pack will burn out.
d) When working on bulbs, unplug power pack or it may burn out.

I need instructions for setting the timer

Malibu product manuals
http://www.malibulights.com/customer_service/owners_manuals.aspx

Manual for 300 Watt power pack
http://malibulights.com/docs/pdf/8100-9300-01.pdf
Read cautions

Tips
300 Watt power pack requires sum of bulbs to equal 300 Watts
If you use 10 - 20 watt bulbs that is only 200 Watts so you need 200 Watt power pack

Replace burnt out bulbs immediately or other bulbs will burn out and shorten life of power pack
When working on bulbs, unplug power pack so it does not shorten life of power pack

Set Malibu Timer:
Red trippers are ON
Black trippers are OFF
Place trippers on dial at ON OFF times/ AM and PM

Set current time of day:
Plug in power pack
Trippers are installed
Rotate dial counter-clockwise to current time, say 9 am
Rotate dial 2 more revolutions and then return to current time
That's it

300W transformer shuts off after 1-3 hrs (231w: OK w 181 watts)

The following might apply to your situation, or not.
Malibu recommends matching wattage of bulbs to wattage of power pack.
In your case, you have 181 watts on 300 Watt power pack.
Based on other folks questions to fixya, this condition can burn out the power pack.
Has your power pack overheated and been damaged?
I don't know, but it might be a good suspect.
