You have done most of the leg work, remove a stick of ram and try again, remove second piece and put back the first and try again, beyond this! you are looking at motherboard issues, a loose DC jack in the laptop will cause intermittent to no power, "common" but requires dis-assembly right down the motherboard level to address.

My compaq presario c 700 laptop keys sticks and runs hot, also runs very slow

sticking keys well! theres only one thing you can do about that is take the keyboard apart and wash the parts in a weak solution of detergent and clean the rest with a damp cloth--someone must have spilt a cup of coffee over it at some stage.
if it runs hot replace the fan, clean the aluminum heat sink of dust ,,hot aint such a big deal as long as the plastic isnt melting
Slow--try anotherOS

I spilled coffee on the key board and need to replace it. The key board appears to be sealed in with a plastic surround. How do i get the key board out? It is an E-system 3213Intel celeron. Yours hopefully...

Take the keyboard and run water over it and take it apart and let the component dry out (while it is not connected to the computer).

I had a mechanic tell me that this is what he did to a keyboard that was part of an automobile engine analysis Bear Ace machine at Sears.

He said that someone spilled a cup of coffee on it and it wouldn't work.

Good luck on this repair of a coffee stained keyboard.

Replace the CMOS battery

You have to disassemble the laptop, and remember where all of the screws came from generally I write the place they came from on a cup and put them in the cup. And then you take a soldering iron and heat up the little metal flip over the battery, if that is the type you have and remove the battery and put the new one in its place, then you take some solder rosin core and put it against the flip piece and allow it to heat up and pull the soldering iron off it to allow the connection to cool and it will be done.

Laptop gets VERY hot, is it a fire hazard?

While its not a fire hazard and most likely will not burst into flames, if it is running that hot, then it is probably damaging the interal parts of the laptop (CPU, Motherboard, etc)

When it reaches a certain temperature, it should shut itself off to protect the CPU from damage of overheating.

When you are using the laptop, is there space between the bottom of the laptop and the place that it's sitting on? (Desk, table, your lap, chair armrest, etc) The laptop needs to have that space to allow for airflow for proper cooling inside. You can purchase laptop coolers for relatively low prices, but if it is getting as hot as a cup of coffee, especially when you use it for a very short time, I would contact HP and have it serviced, one of the cooler fans may have failed. 1-800-HP-INVENT
