If the laptop is turning on then try plugging in the laptop to an external monitor and see if you get anything on the screen. If the laptop works normally with the external monitor then you will need the screen replaced . If the laptop still shows nothing on the external monitor then you will need to repair your laptop.
if the power is on and the screen does not show up , try to hook an external monitor using the VGA cable. If the screen does show up, it means that the problem is in the laptop LCD monitor itself. Otherwise if the external monitor does not show up, that means your laptop does not boot anymore to the operating system. Try to turn off the power and remove the power cable and battery on the laptop. Then press and hold the power button for 8 secs. Then reinsert the battery and power cables on the laptop then turn on the laptop. If there is still no screen displayed then call Lenovo for repair of your laptop.
A white screen usually means the LCD panel has failed/worn out. Here's an easy way to make sure. Get your laptop to an external monitor, whether at your home or a friend's place, and with the laptop off and the external monitor off, connect the monitor video (vga) cable to your laptop. Turn them both on and then on your Dell laptop hold down the fn key down in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard and press the F8 key up at the top. That transfers the video signal to the external monitor.
If the external monitor shows your laptops normal desktop and icons, then you know for sure the LCD screen on your laptop is worn out. If you get the same white screen on the external monitor, it means the video card/controller on the motherboard of your laptop has worn out and you can move ahead with deciding on repairs or other options.
Good Luck.
PS....if the F8 key doesn't transfer the video signal. look at all the F keys for one that says CRT or one that has a little picture of a monitor to transfer the signal.
"no signal" means that the monitor is not receiving a video signal from your computer or laptop. This is normal if the compouter is OFF and the monitor is ON. Is the computer still on and connected to the monitor?
It appears to be a video card/mainboard problem very common with the symptoms you have described. Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor (see the associated buttons too). No video signal on the external monitor could indicate a damaged video card/mainboard. Not worth it to be repaired and the replacement is expansive. Check the price on a professional repair store. There are new laptops on the market more powerful than yours for about 500-600$. So you can make a choice. Less common, could be a memory problem.Try the laptop with a good previously checked memory (or if there are 2 bars in your laptop, try them one by one). If you do not get any video signal on the external monitor have the laptop, first diagnostic is most probable.
In both cases, if you get a video signal on the external monitor it means your screen is defective (also expensive to be replaced).
when you connect external monitor to a laptop u get two options in the monitor section of graphic properties tab
1.) extended 2.) clone
it is clear from ur post that u are using extended view
try using clone mode then both laptop screen and external monitor will show the main screen
other method is to disable the laptop screen and just allow external monitor to work, in this case laptop screen shows nothing but external monitor shows main screen
If your system won't display anything w/o the external monitor. there's something wrong with the LCD's backlight. you may have to contact your laptop's manufacturer and check if this laptop is still under warranty. you may have to get the lcd replaced.
