Question about Singer Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I recently acquired a Singer Zig Zag model 457. The machine was not picking up the cotton from the bobbin so I took out the bobbin and the bobbin casing. Now I cannot get the casing to fit back ptoperly so it can be locked in place by the little latch which should move from right to left towards the bobbin casing. Can you help? Doug Herold

There are little tips on the 'backside' side of the bobbin casing you just have to wiggle the casing around keepingin mind that the back side needs to fit into place for the rest to drop on in. then you have to get just a little forceful with the the little black brace that should snug the bobbin casngback into place and keep it secure

SOURCE: I rethreaded a bobbin and

make sure that your needle is a good, sometimes there is a slight bend or burr and you do not notice. Replace it and make sure that the flat side of the needle faces the rear of the machine, then hold you top thread end and lower your needle and watch it hook the bobbin thread (when you put your bobbin make sure you have it in your tension slot and there is at least 6 inches) then gently pull your top thread and pull your threads to the back (have at least 6inches or else the needle can unthread.

Have you changed your presser foot over to the zig zag foot? On some machines it won't work correctly until you change to the correct presser foot.

I am trying to replace monofilm panels in a windsurfing sail, using a Singer 457 zig zag sewing machine. I cannot create a good zig zag seam when the monofilm is sandwiched between two canvas layers.

Joe, you might try a larger needle than you're using. You might also want to try a larger leather needle. You machine should take needles up to a size 18.

It sounds like the needle you're using is having a problem picking up the bobbin thread, and that might solve it.

How to thread childs singer zig zag sewing machine

You didn't give the model name for the machine; however, if it's a Pixie or Pixie Plus, you can download the user's manual that shows you how to thread it and wind a bobbin from the Singer Sewing Machine site. The number listed above your question is not a legitimate model number; it might be a serial number.

More than likely you have a broken vertical shaft gear.

When you turn the handwheel you should see the sewing hook moving under the bobbin case.

If not, take it to a sewing repair person and it should cost somewhere around $100 to repair.
