Question about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS / IXUS 100 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Please disregard last question! I was shooting pix in heavy rain and the camera got wet-even inside. I took it apart to dry, but now a freshly charged battery won't power it up. Is all hope lost for this wonderful cam, or is there something I might be able to do to salvage it?

You can try burying it in a bowl of uncooked rice for a week. However, if you tried to start it up while water was inside the circuits, you may have fried them.

The engine got wet wont start, why? Where to start looking?

First check the air filter to make sure you didn't suck water into the filter.

I was shooting pix in heavy rain, the inside got wet and after taking the cover off to let it dry it won't work. Is there any hope of fixing it now?

If you tried to turn it on and it didn't, it likely won't work. But, it's possible it still will. Try removing the battery and letting the camera sit in a bag of rice for a day, that will remove any extra moisture. If it doesn't work after that, you'll probably have to get a new camera.

Took the Canon Power Shot on a fishing charter at Coasta Rico. Camera was dampened in a bag with a wave of salt water. Not drenched but dampened. Took batteries out and dried camera for 7 days and still...

Saltwater? I don't think you're going to revive this camera. If it were fresh water - you'd have a fighting chance - but salt water is highly corrosive and is a much better electrical conductor than fresh water. Even if you managed to get the camera work right after it got wet - chances are the salt would eventually "work its magic" and corrode metal circuits inside the camera and cause it to fail - much the way salt "eats cars" in areas that roads are treated with salt in winter to control ice.

If you ever have a water problem with something not designed to get wet, place the item in a bowl of uncooked rice. Cover completely and let it sit a day or two. The dry rice will wick away water and moisture on and inside the device. If doused in salt water, the water will be absorbed - but salt deposits are left behind, as salt can not be evaporated.

I know it wasn't what you wanted to hear... good luck.

I left my Sony DSLR our in then .. it didnt rain for a long time. When I finally remembered and went to pick it up it was completely dry .. we didnt turn it on and we took the battery out immediately .....

Hi!

You may keep it turned off until all the external parts and the battery compartments get dry. Furthermore, since the Camera has got wet in rain so there is possibility that rain water may have imbibed inside the Camera thus causing mechanical failure.

So, if the Camera doesn't turn ON even after drying it completely and charging the Battery fully. In that case, service will be required.

Phone got wet & works fine but says network error

Cell phones do not recover gracefully from getting wet internally. The electronics were not made to get wet.
You would be better served to get a new phone. Getting a cell phone wet is almost alway death to the electronics, even if the phone is dried out completely, The problems caused by the damp electronics will cause strange and intermittent problems.

Been out in the rain and despite covering my digital slr it may have got damp. Now it won't switch from manual to auto focus even though the switch moves. Is gentle drying likely to cure the problem?

Took lens off the camera and let it dry out in gentle heat over a period of five hours. The problem seems to be solved.
Moral of this story; don't put too much faith in waterproof covers during very heavy downpours!
