Question about Blue Microphones Blue Bluebird Condenser Microphone Microphone

1 Answer

I am using pro tools 8 LE. I have a blue bluebird condenser microphone. the cable going into the mic is a male 3 pronged end. and the end going into my avid mbox mini is a normal ending (the ones that look like regular headphones but larger) i have tried every combination between switching it between input 1 and 2 and messing with the IO on pro tools and i cannot for the life of me get the mic to record into pro tools. the weird thing is, when i knock or tap the top of the mbox, the mic volume level jumps up, but wont take any of my voice when i talk in the mic. i am super confused someone please help me give me step by step what i need to do. or if i am missing a different cable for the mic PLEASE HELP thank you

The mbox mini is usb powered, wont work without power so your mac or pc must be powered on and connected. The blue led will be on when powered. Assuming you have the the appropriate cables, you want to make sure the condenser is plugged into the Mic/Line input. (Input 1 on the back of the mbox mini). All condenser mics require phantom power, so engage the +48V switch. Also make sure the DI (direct input) switch is not engaged. The input gain control is located on the front of the mbox... There needs to be speakers connected to the 1/4 output jacks on the back of the mbox or headphones on the front for sound output. Use the large knob for monitor volume control.
In protools: Create a Stereo Master fader track
Create a mono audio track
Set the input of the mono audio track to Mic/Line 1 Arm the track for record (click & make sure the R is red)
You should getting levels and sound output from your condenser.

What is the best way to run the mic on desktop

Your condensor mic requires special electrical handling usually reserved for proffesional audio equipment, not a PC. You will need two pieces of equipment, a short XLR cable and an adapter cable.
1) Behringer PS400 Ultra-Compact Phantom Power Supply.
This will supply the mic with necessary Phantom Power.
2) Rapco Horizon ISOBLOX Transformer Isolation 1:1 BLOX Device
This will isolate the Phantom Power from your computer, allowing it to work as necessary.
The adaptor connector cable you need will be a female XLR (with pins 1 and 3 shorted, pin 2 hot), through a cable connect to a 1/8" mini plug. They connect in that order with a short XLR cable between 1) and 2). .

The recording level to my Mbox is very low for some reason. I am running Pro Tools LE and I have a shure 87a microphone. Every time I attempt to record a track, the input volume is incredibly low...

Make sure you turn the Phantom power on the Mbox2 on as the Shure 87A requires it being a condenser mic.Make sure you use XLR mic cables. These are just things to check on.

I have a superlu pra-h7a. I also have a cable that connects to the bottom via a three pronged male plug with with a female connector on the other end. i have not used this in years, and can't remember how...

You need to connect it to a mixer first and from there to an amp/speaker combo. This microphone needs phantom power and you can only get it via the mixer. Also, you can control the volume via the mixer. Depends on what kind of speaker you have (active or passive) you will need an amplifier. If you're trying to plug it into a guitar amp, it won't work without a mixer. Plug the 3-prong xlr male cable into the input of the mixer. The 3-prong female xlr end goes into the mic.

My akg perception 200 is not responding

Have you tried using a another XLR cable..,or are the other mics phantom powered condensers..ie try to locate if its a mic problem or the cable..2 other points are 1 - XLR leads for phantom mics need to be XLR to XLR male to Female plugs[ends] 2- is that often an XLR to XLR cable will be not soldered or wired right,so that the power [phantom power is not getting to the mic] so ensure you have a proper cable for that job...Sorry i can't be more specific but from reading your problem all these issues come to mind..If you have ruled all these things out, then it could be the capsule or loose joint or component in the mic which means contact AKG,pro audio services or find a DIY mic person to help..G luck!!

Don't know the conections of blue or red

If we're talking about the microphone cable wiring on a low impedance mic remember this. Cheap mic cables with XLR's on both ends often have no standard color code to follow. True pin 1 is ALWAYS ground (shield wire) but the other two wires could be any color of the rainbow. Look for small numbers beside each pin of the XLR connector and make sure that pin two on one end of your cable, is also pin two on the other end as well....etc. Special note: The XLR connectors set screws have reversed threads and it's the same for the XLR male plug in the bottom of the microphone as well.....Glen
