Question about McCulloch Points Pro Mac 6 Or 6a Chainsaw Chain Saw

1 Answer

I have an older McCulloch chain saw- Pro Mac 610. When using the saw the chain will get very tight. If I adjust the chain to the proper tension, make a couple of cuts the chain loosens and must be tightened. Then the process repeats and the chain becomes excessively tight. Can you tell me what the problem may be.

The main reason for a chain to tighten is because it is not getting enough oil to the bar, or too thin an oil is being used, you should see a good spray of oil off the end of the bar when held against a tree stump, if not try adjusting the flow if it has an adjuster.

Where do u tighting up the chain on the chain saw.

Depends on what model, however there are two main locations for the adjuster screw, the most common is at the very front of the saw, running inline with the guide bar , you may well have to clean the dirt and saw dust from the front of the saw to see it,it will be close to the inside edge of the bar, it will be a normal screw driver head screw, turn clockwise to tention the chain, the other type will be in the side cover, at right angles to the saw, again it will be a normak screw driver head, turn clockwise to increase the chain tention.

Current mix for McCulloch/Poulan is 40:1.
1 gallon of premium fuel to 3.2 ounces of quality 2-cycle oil.

If your saw is adjusted for 50:1 it starts easier, takes longer to carbon foul, and your grandchildren breath a little easier.
1 gallon of premium fuel to 2.6 ounces of quality 2-cycle oil.

Where is the release to the blade on a 380 powermac

An IPL for a Power Mac 380 can be found here:
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/MCC/11-600141F-Power-MAC-380AS-%282-Bar-Bolt%29-10%2F84-to-02%2F86-IPL-218024-R1/139.11-600141F-Power-MAC-380AS-%282-Bar-Bolt%29-10%2F84-to-02%2F86-IPL-218024-R1.1.59.1.html
on this IPL (may not be your saw)
Item 1 (2 each on this saw) are bar retaining nuts (loosen to adjust bar and chain; remove nuts and clutch cover (chain brake released (brake pulled aft then released)) to remove bar).
Item 140 is the tension adjuster, loosen it some before attempting to remove the bar.
Remove the chain; then remove the bar.
use this to find the correct IPL for your saw.
McCulloch Manuals
Illustrated Parts Lists: (IPLs) are fairly simple. On the underside of McCulloch saws is a black and yellow tag; the upper number (“Power Mac 320” 600021H) is the model, below it a serial number (11-18555). These 2 numbers are combined to create an IPL number (“Power Mac 320” IPL number = 11-600021H). The IPL number can be used to find the correct IPL for every McCulloch parts supplier I’ve found. If the parts supplier only list part numbers the proper IPL is the source for the part number.
Operator’s Manuals: are much more difficult. I’ve dialed this number many times (Contact Us - All McCulloch Products 1 (800) 521-8559) and have yet to get a satisfactory response. Please try this! If enough of us try they will fix it!

This saw? Be kind to your elders.

The IPLs I’ve found for your saw don't show this detail. I suggest you try here:

There is a McCulloch thread. Your saw is held in high regard. I’m quite sure some of the members will be willing to post some close up photos of the set up on their saws. HTH

McCulloch Pro Mac 610 replacement chain

The McCulloch ProMac 600 series (610/650) doesn't recommend a saw chain replacement part because you can get differently-sized bars for it. This one came with a 20" bar.
According to an Amazon.com search tonight, the Oregon company makes a replacement part stock number D70. I have got an Oregon H78 replacement chain at my hardware store and it's a hair too small. Not all 20" saw chains are created equal!!
