This error can be caused if there is anything blocking the movement of the carriage. I just had a client with this problem on Tuesday and it turned out that they had opened the print head cover and had not closed it properly. This caused the metal latch to block the movement of the carriage. I would check that first, as well as look for any small bits of paper that may be blocking the complete movement of the carriage.

Well!!!! I just fixed my problem after 3 days of reading all this on the internet. It was part of the cutter assembly, and the part with the spring was out of position. I reset it, and the plotter started up properly.
There was no paper jam like it said. HP should fix this error code, since the problems are not just about paper!

Not to defend HP but the error code indicates a problem with the carriage movement, unfortunately they often state only the most common problem which is paper, when other issues do happen as well.

THANK YOU!!! THIS FIXED MY PROJECT. THE SPRING LOADED BUTTON WAS STUCK IN THE EXTENDED OUT POSITION. SO WHEN THE CARRIAGE SLID INTO IT, IT WOULD BUTT INTO IT RATHER THAN ENGAGE IT. I JUST HAD TO PUSH HARD ONCE TO MAKE THE BUTTON GO IN, AND EUREKA I GOT PASSED THIS PAINFUL 86.01 JAM ERROR. THIS MACHINE HAD BEEN PARKED FOR A FEW YEARS AWAITING A STAR WHEEL MOTOR OPERATION. THAT IS WHY THE BUTTON LIKELY STUCK. I WOULD HAVE NEVER FOUND THIS IF IT WASNT FOR THIS POST. THANK YOU!

During initialisation it shows dat there is jam

during the warm up cycle the carriage has to reach both ends of the scan platten if for any reason it is not able to achive this it throws the error Paper jam or 86:01 ( both mean the same thhing)
what you need to do:-
1) disconnect the plotter from the mains
2) open the central lid and using a torch look carefully along the carriage path for any obstacles or debris that may interfere with the carriage motion.
3) assuming there is no obvious blockages look carefully at the carriage drive belt to see if the imprinted teeth have worn off you may also see what looks like mouse droppings on the print platen
4) remove the right end cap - move the sercvice staion out of the way of the carriage and then gently ease the carriage to both left and right extents checking all the while for debris, leave the carriage on the left and leave the service station out of home position, return the mains lead and allow th plotter to initialize checking to see if the plotter is able to move both assemblies as required.if not then call out a qualifed enginner to replace defective drive belt or carriage assembly or indeed the service station

Paper jam plotter

do you ever see either of these codes during the error-86:01 or 42.xx
if so this could just be a case of upgrading the software(firmware) of the plotter, there is a known problem with the starwheel lift mechanism whic is solved by the firmware upgrade,.
if you havent seen either of those errors then your problem may lie with torn paper in or about the service station area stopping the carriage from reaching its home position ( required at warmup) or the cariirage drive belt may be worn in areas ( the rubber belt with ridges (teeth) that spans the entire print platten and is attached to the carriage) check with a torch to look down inside either end cap of the plooter looking for what looks like mouse droppings. this is a clear sign of the drive belt aging .
any of the above will give you the error that your experiencing
hope this helps

86:01 error in designjet 500 plus Paper jam...

System Error: 86:01
Problem Description: Carriage-Axis shutdown.
Corrective Action:
If this error code appeared but was NOT caused by a paper jam, then try the following:
  • Too much friction in the Slider Rod. Enter the Printer Information utility and check the Scan-Axis usage. If the percentage is close to 100%, then lubricate the Slider Rod.
  • The Carriage is bumping into the Service Station. If the carriage is stuck at the right hand side of the Printer and cannot be moved out to the center of the Print Platen it is because the Service Station cannot uncap the Printheads. In this case replace the Service Station/Aerosol Fan Assembly
  • Perform the Carriage Movement test

Error code 21:13 restart the printer if the problem persists, call hp support

It all depends on the machine but typically all the 21 errors relate to the service station. this is the part to the right of the machine that "caps" the carriage and print heads when the carriage parks after a print. 13 refers to power cycling the machine to reboot it. If you need more precise info you will need to post the model and more info.

Hi, I am using an HP Designjet 4520ps plotter and am getting error 84.16:01 - Possible paper jam. There is no jam, it occurs somewhere in the middle of a print job and renders the job a waste. Any...

84.16:01 is a BT arm failure.
In the diagnostics submenu, go to 2.2 BT Arm test. Press ENTER.
If you have a failure, The front panel will display System Error Code 01.0:10.
At this point call HP if you still have a warranty. Otherwise, call a trained DesignJet tech

Error 47:01 for hp desighjet t1100 plotter

This error relates to the starwheel assembly and motor. Open the printer and make sure that there are no paper jams or anything blocking the star wheels (the little pointy wheels that guide the paper.

If nothing is visisble then service diagnostics are required. Not sure of your technical skill level, so post back if you are comfortable disassembling the unit, if not, contact HP to find a local Designjet technician.

Recommended for tec guys only:Error indication that service station error, open right cover check is there any obstacles in service station movement?.. check the service station connectors, if feel every thing is fine, remove service station, found dirty? remove motors, remove service station cover, clean entire unit with water, ensure that stocked ink entire should washed out, allow service station to dry, fix it up, apply grease for moving parts, fix entire back then try....for confirmation do the service test..** cleaning service station is dirty work but it will give good mileage, while cleaning take care of sucking tubes & drop detector unit.. Best of luck..

This usually is solved by removing and reinstalling the ink cartridges...make sure the electrical contacts are clean (use a dry paper towel) on both the print cartridge and the carriage.

If the error still happens then the carriage or trailing cable are bad and will need replaced.
